Biography

Tseklenis was born in Athens in 1937 and grew up in Psychiko (a suburb near Athens). His father was from Pyrgos while his mother was a Greek from Istanbul. After finishing school he started working in his family's couture-fabric retail business. During 1961 Tseklenis created an advertising company while in 1962 and 1964 decorated Athens Cathedral for the wedding ceremonies of Juan Carlos of Spain and princess Sofia of Greece (1962) and Constantine II of Greece and Anne-Marie of Denmark (1964). The following year, Tseklenis became owner of the family business and presented his first fabric designs. In 1967 founded the fashion company “boutiques Tseklenis”. During 1971, Tseklenis designed the new uniforms for Olympic Airways' flight attendants. In 1974, Tseklenis designed the uniforms for Air Malta and two Greek banks while his designs were available in various countries. The following years, he collaborated with companies like Minion (el), Fiat, Peiraiki-Patraiki etc.
Since 1991, he works as a designer and art-director in collaboration with companies. He designed trains for OSE, buses, interior rooms for hotels, institutions and villas, uniforms for major companies etc. In 1997, Tseklenis donated his archive of 600 ensembles, photographs, patterns, drawings etc to the Peloponnesian Folklore Foundation.
Honours
Tseklenis' contribution to the Greek fashion industry has been awarded with various distinctions like Silver Cross of the order of Phoenix, Gold Medal of Fashion, Maiden of Cyclades and Diolkos Prize of Hellenic Marketing Academy.
Personal life
Tseklenis has been married twice: previously to Aspa Pesmatzoglou and from 1964 to ex model Efi Mela. He is father of the director Konstantinos Tseklenis. In 1977, Yannis Tseklenis suffered an surgery that costed him the amputation of his left arm in order to prevent a reoccurrence of cancer.
