Plot

The show follows the love story of Ishita Iyer, who is a Tamil dentist and Raman Kumar Bhalla, who is a Punjabi CEO, who both live in the capital city of India, Delhi. Ishita is sterile and gets attached emotionally to Raman's daughter, Ruhi, who lives with her divorced father. Raman's ex-wife, Shagun Arora, lives with her boyfriend and Raman's ex-boss and business rival, Ashok Khanna, and Aditya (Adi), her and Raman's son. Bhallas and Iyers are neighbors. Due to circumstances, Raman and Ishita marry each other for Ruhi's custody and gradually fall in love with each other and lead a happy life.

Shagun creates trouble in Ishita and Raman's life. Shagun wants to marry Ashok and Ishita's sister Mihika is marrying Shagun's brother Mihir. Mihir treats Raman as his brother. Ashok tries to molest Mihika. Shagun and Ashok's marriage is cancelled. Ashok blackmails Mihika and Mihika marries him to save Mihir. Soon Raman's son Aditya(Adi) with Shagun also comes to them and lives with them. Shagun tries to create troubles in Ishita and Raman's marriage using Adi but she fails. Ishita gets Raman's sister Rinky and Mihir married.Shagun leaves Bhalla house. Mihika reveals true reason behind marrying Ashok and divorces him. Raman's brother Romi marries a pregnant Sarika. Romi had left her before but later accepted her for his son Rohit. Ishita's ex-fiance Subramaniam Chandran/Subbu returns in Ishita's life. Subbu tried to created problems in Raman and Ishita's life to revenge. But later his misunderstanding is cleared. Shagun also turns positive and everyone started living a good life.

Sarika starts supporting Ashok because Ashok, knows Sarika's secret. Sarika had lied to Romi that Rohit is his son. Sarika had a miscarried Romi's child. She adopted baby from an orphanage. Romi gets to know about this truth and throws Sarika out of his life. Mihir's wife and Raman's sister Rinky is murdered. Shagun is marrying Ishita's doctor Manoj Paul. Ishita took Manoj's treatment and gets pregnant. Ishita has a miscarriage due to an accident. Shagun becomes surrogate mother for Ishita's baby. Nidhi Chabra a successful lawyer enters in Raman's life, who had come to take revenge from Raman for her father's death. Before Raman's marriage with Shagun, Raman's mother Toshi was finding marriage alliance for Raman. She had taken marriage proposal to Chabra house. But Raman rejected it because at that time he loved Shagun. Nidhi's father died because of that.She became Ishita's lawyer and framed Ishita in a murder case. In order to get proof of Ishita's innocence, Raman fakes love for Nidhi. He finds the evidence that proves Ishita innocent. Nidhi gets arrested, but she runs away.

Shagun gives birth to Ishita's daughter Pihu. Nidhi kidnaps Pihu from hospital. Nidhi asks Raman to give Ruhi to her and take Pihu with him and asks him not to inform the police. Raman does the same but Ishita secretly calls the police to the place. Unfortunately, things didn't happen as expected and Ishita takes Pihu but Nidhi ran away with Ruhi and both of them were declared as dead in a car accident. Post this accident, Raman gets completely shaken and blames Ishita as she has informed the police, he scolded her a lot. Ishita also couldn't bear Ruhi's death and attempts suicide recalling Ruhi's death and Raman's bitter words and she is declared dead. Everybody is shocked. Mihika blames Raman for Ishita's suicide. Romi also breaks all his ties with Raman because Raman had said that Romi was keeping eye on Pihu in hospital but Nidhi successfully kidnapped Pihu. Ishita is saved by her friend Abhimanyu Raghav(Mani) who meets with accident while saving Ishita.

7 Years Later

Ishita is living in Australia with Abhimanyu (Mani) and his niece Aliya. Ishita is still living in guilt for Ruhi's death. In Delhi, Raman and Shagun are acting as a married couple for the sake of Pihu. Pihu is Ishita's and Raman's daughter and is a look alike of Ruhi. Pihu doesn't know about Ishita being her biological mother and assumes Shagun as her mother. Romi, now estranged with the family, lives with Mihika and is now a big businessman with Ashok as his business partner. Bhalla and Iyers are not on talking terms. Ruhi lives with Nidhi in Australia. Nidhi has changed her identity to Nimrit Chopra and is bringing up Ruhi as Ruhaan, a rockstar, in the disguise of a boy. Nidhi abuses Ruhi physically and mentally and makes Ruhi believe that Ishita had chosen her biological daughter(Pihu), over her step daughter(Ruhi). So Ruhi hates Ishita.

Mani loves Ishita but knows that Ishita only loves Raman and will never reciprocate his feelings. As his business is in loss, Mani decides to sell his company but Ishita changes his mind. Aliya advises him to hire Ruhaan for endorsing and they go ahead with the plan. Thus Ruhi comes to know about Ishita living away from Raman and vows that she will never let them reunite. Romi and Mihika decide to get married. Raman comes to Australia to buy Mani's company but Mani refuses to sell. Pihu also comes with Raman and she sees Ishita in Australia. Pihu recalls seeing Ishita's photo with garland in Iyer's house and tells Shagun that she has seen Ishita in Australia. Shagun also comes to Australia to confirm about Ishita but fails. Ruhaan/Ruhi agrees to become brand ambassador for both companies of Mani and Raman. Ishita and Raman are traveling in same flight to Mumbai for Ruhi/Ruhaan's Ad campaign. Their flight gets hijacked and they don't see each other. Mihika has come to Mumbai to see Raman as the family is worried after the hijack and gets shocked to see her sister, Ishita, alive in the hospital getting treated as Ishita is injured in the hijack. Mihika tells Ishita that she is getting married and tells her about her daughter Pihu who looks like Ruhi. Adi comes to Mumbai to show Mihika wedding dress design. He sees Ishita and gets shocked and Mihika tells him not to tell anyone about Ishita being alive. Adi meets Ishita hiding his identity and wants to reunite Ishita and Raman.

Some goons misbehave with Aliya and blame is put on Adi. Ishita meets Adi in the police station and realizes that he is her son. Raman and family see Ishita and get to know that she is alive. Abhishek finds goons that misbehaved with Aliya and Adi is proven innocent. Raman is upset and angry because Ishita didn't tell anyone about being alive and decides to marry Shagun. Raman does not want Ishita to meet Pihu. Ruhi, as Ruhaan, comes to Romi-Mihika's marriage and is shocked to see Pihu who looks like her and she also meets Ishita and Adi. Ishita decides to clear differences between Bhallas and Iyers. Ishita comes to live in same building. Ruhi in her original look also comes to live in same building with Ishita and tells Ishita that her name is Ruhi Chopra. Romi sees Nidhi in Ashok's house and Ishita sees Nidhi when she came to meet Ruhi and get Nidhi's whereabouts. Romi stops Shagun and Raman's marriage and tells everyone that Nidhi is found. Nidhi is caught and arrested. Ruhi's secret comes out Everyone meet Ruhi but Ruhi tells them that she hates Ishita and Raman and wants to live with Nidhi. Ishita and Raman decide to file Ruhi's custody case. Ruhi goes against Ishita and Raman in court. Judge gives 30 days to Ishita and Raman to convince Ruhi to live with them and win back her trust. Ishita comes to stay at Bhalla house which makes Shagun insecure about her position in Bhalla family.

In this time, Ruhi bonds with Pihu. Ishita and Raman also start coming close to each other. Irritated to stay with Ishita and family, Ruhi puts condition that Ishita and Raman should get married then she will live here. Ishita, Raman and family agree for marriage. But before marriage, Nidhi and Ashok plan to kidnap Ruhi and mistakenly Ishita gets kidnapped. Everybody doubt on Nidhi and Ashok and this doubt is confirmed when Raman gets a video of Nidhi and Ashok's conversation, which shows that they had kidnapped Ishita mistakenly but now Ishita is not with them. Ishita returns house when judge was announcing her decision that she is giving Ruhi's custody to Bhalla family. Finally Ruhi accepts Ishita and starts loving her more than ever. It is then revealed that Shagun, being insecure after Ishita's coming, is behind kidnapping but this is all unknown to the family. Ishita wants Mani to marry to Shagun so that they have each other's companionship. Ruhi attempts to bring Ishita and Pihu closer. Shagun decides to marry Mani to get Pihu's custody after marriage. Shagun starts brainwashing Pihu against Ishita.

On the day of marriage, Ishita comes across evidence that proves Shagun as the kidnapper but she is unable to stop the wedding. Nobody believes Ishita when she tells this to the family. When Ishita confronts Shagun, Shagun challenges Ishita that she will never let come Pihu near her. Shagun helps Nidhi to come out of jail. Adi accidentally tells Raman that he loves Aliya. Aliya tells Ishita that she loves someone. Ishita hears Adi talking to Aliya and assumes that Aliya also loves Adi. Shagun comes to know that Aliya loves Mihir and decides to use it against Ishita. Raman starts taking care of Pihu in order to lessen her dependency on Shagun. But Pihu on Shagun's instructions make Ishita leave the house. Adi is heartbroken when he comes to know Aliya loves Mihir. Mihir tries to make Aliya realize that she is just infatuated with him. Adi, in drunken state, threatens Aliya that he would not let her be happy. Aliya decides to apologize to Adi and calls him to meet her. But she is attacked with acid and the blame comes on Adi.

Shagun sends notice of Pihu's custody case to Raman. In court, Shagun shows birth certificate of Pihu in which Shagun's name is written as Pihu's mother. Mani, angry with Ishita as he believes Adi attacked Aaliya, testifies in favour of Shagun and court gives Pihu's custody to Shagun. Adi's innocence is proved and Nidhi is arrested for the attack. Raman blames Mani for Pihu being away from him. Shagun and Ashok create more misunderstandings between Raman and Mani. When Mani and Raman come to know that Adi and Aliya love each other, they are against the relationship and Mani arranges Aaliya's marriage with someone else. Aliya's grandmother, Shobhana Venkatesh, stops the engagement. She likes Adi and decides to get Adi and Aaliya married on the condition that Raman and Ishita should get remarried. Raman and Ishita get married again. Shagun brings Pihu to the wedding. Later Mani scolds her for not thinking about Pihu and in anger tells Ishita is Pihu's real mother which Pihu overhears. Pihu asks Shagun about it but Shagun denies it. Mihika and Mihir get framed in fake scandal. Someone is blackmailing Mihika about it. Romi's friend Kunal Sethi who is lawyer whom Raman met for Pihu's custody is behind blackmailing. Ishita comes to know about it. Simmi, Mihika, Mihir with Ishita make a plan to get CD of Mihika's pictures back from Kunal. But their plan fails because Kunal comes to know about their plan. Ishita and Mihika get arrested for blackmailing Kunal. Ashok calls media. Romi and Raman come to know about it. Raman bails out Ishita and Mihika. Shagun makes Pihu watch the news and creates drama of Pihu eating sleeping pills because of depression and Raman blames Ishita for everything. Ishita wants to take Pihu to child counselor. Aliya takes Pihu to child counselor and Shagun comes to know about it. Raman gets more angry on Ishita. Mani decides to shift to Bangkok and Raman fails to stop him. Raman leaves Bhalla house to be with Pihu blaming Ishita.

1 Year Later

Raman has moved with Shagun to Bangkok, where she is enjoying a lavish lifestyle while Raman nurtures Pihu. On the other hand, Ishita is living in India and handling all duties that Raman had left behind. Soon, with the excuse of a meeting, Ishita leaves for Australia where she meets Raman secretly. While, hiding the matter from Shagun and their family, but Ruhi follows Ishita to Australia, as she believes that Ishita has an affair with Vidyut, but actually Vidyut is helping Raman and Ishita reunite and Shagun wants to flirt with Vidyut. Shagun knows about their truth and get shocked.

After this, Ruhi helps Ishita and Raman getting back Pihu by telling Pihu about the sacrifices of Ishita and Ishita is her real mother and she was separated from family for 7 years. She married Raman when Ruhi was of Pihu's age. She is her sister like Adi is her brother. Then, Pihu understands Ishita. She comes to Delhi with Ishita and Raman. Later, she went to meet Shagun where Shagun scolded her for leaving her leaving Pihu disappointed. Raman invites Vidyut for dinner to his house. Everybody is excited for meeting Vidyut. They meet Vidyut. After this, Vidyut was arrested for a blame of suicide of Nisha Mirchandini. Later, in Nisha's suicide note, Ishita was blame for her suicide. Ruhi is in Australia. Ruhi comes to know about Ishita's arrest and wants to come back to India but flight is full. Sohail Behl gives his extra ticket to her. She returns to India. Later with the help of Sohail, Ishita escapes from the blame. Everyone thank Sohail for his help. Adi fails to renew godown contract for Raman's company and Raman is upset because of it. Sohail gives his company's godown to Raman's company. Ruhi is going to sing at the concert for Sohail's entertainment company. Bhalla family gives farewell party to Vidyut. Ruhi invites Sohail in that party.

Somebody is blackmailing Ruhi with a MMS. Video was made in Australia. Raman, Ishita, Shagun try to find out blackmailer by seeing CCTV footage of that flat. They see a tattoo on his left arm. Blackmailer had demanded 18 lakh rupees. Sohail also starts helping Ruhi. Blackmailer later demands 30 lakh rupees from her after he comes to know that Bhalla family had gone to police. Sohail arranges money and goes to meet blackmailer. Ruhi is with him. Romi doubts on Raman that he is hiding something from the family. Raman tells Romi about Ruhi's MMS and blackmailer. Romi and Raman find the location of blackmailer's phone but find a dead body. Sohail's uncle Vikram Behl meets Ishita who is a taxi driver. Ishita sees same tattoo on his left arm. Ishita asks him about it. He tells her that this tattoo is on everybody's arm in his family. He also tells her that his nephew Sohail Behl has also same tattoo on his left arm. Pihu has fever and she is scared because of something. Ishita tells about Sohali's tattoo to Raman. They call Sohail for dinner to check his tattoo. Ishita purposely drops water on Sohail. Raman takes to his room to change his clothes and checks his tattoo but they do not see tattoo and Ishita asks him about his tattoo. He understands everything and leaves from there angrily. Ruhi goes to stop him. Ruhi gets angry on Ishita. Raman also gets angry on Ishita. Later Raman also doubts on Sohail and shares it with Ishita. Raman pretends to angry with Ishita and pretends to trust on Sohail in front of Ruhi. Later it is revealed that Sohail is blackmailer. He made Ruhi's MMS and used another person and his phone to blackmail Ruhi. It is revealed that he is Nidhi's brother.

ACP Abhishek informs Ishita and Raman about the tattoo artist who was found at the back of his house and that someone had injected him drugs. He is in a critical situation in the hospital unable to talk. Pihu gets scared on seeing blood. Ishita informs Raman about it and both are worried about their daughters. Sohail tortures his uncle by injecting him with drugs. He reveals to him that he is blackmailing Ruhi to take revenge with Raman Bhalla for his father's death. His uncle Vikram Behl dies. Ishita tells Ruhi the truth of about Sohail being Nidhi's brother. Sohail is arrested. In the court, Pihu testifies against Sohail that she has seen Sohail doing the crime. Ruhi also comes in the court and takes the blame on her. Ruhi is arrested and sent to jail. Raman gets angry on Ishita. Sohail has threatened Ruhi to take blame on her. Ishita and Shagun plan to prove Ruhi innocent. They blackmail Sohail to confess crime by planting a bomb on Nidhi's body. Sohail writes confession letter and signs it. Ruhi is released. Ishita with Pihu and Ruhi leaves Bhalla house. Romi and Raman's father Omprakash also leave Bhalla house and they go to stay at Iyer house. While Ishita's mother supports Raman and goes at Bhalla house. Raman now makes efforts to make bring Ishita back and apologizes in front of her. But all his efforts fail. Raman gets drunk. Raman's mother Toshi pretends to be ill to take back Ishita to Bhalla house. Ishita returns to Bhalla house for Toshi. Ishita comes to know that Toshi was pretending to be ill and assumes that Raman had told her to pretend and again leaves house for taking care of Shagun because she is pregnant. Adi is not happy with this. Raman tries to meet Pihu but fails. He goes to meet Pihu in disguise and become her governance Gulabo Singh. Raman sends flowers and card to Ishita on their marriage anniversary. Raman brings actor to become Gulabo's husband.Nidhi has faked her death and ran away from the police and living in disguise.

Ishita returns home with Ruhi and Pihu.She started suspecting Nidhi being alive.Bhalla's and Iyer's celebrate Holi happily and they have a plan.Ishita and Raman drink bhang and do some funny acts.Vandita returns home she meets everyone.Mihika and Ishita spend some time with her all three sister's go out to eat ice cream but unfortunately Vandita meet's with an accident.Ishita get shocked by seeing an accident she sees car and number which have hit Vandita and get shocked by seeing Raman's car.Mihika and Ishita take Vandita to hospital.Everyone got to know about accident and everyone rushes to hospital to see Vandita.Doctor's confirms everyone that Vandita is no more!.Everyone get shocked and they cry.Police suspect Raman for Vandita's accident through CCTV of accident area and time.Raman get silent and by this Iyer' especially Amma starts blaming Raman for Vandita's accident,but Ishita feels Raman cannot do this he is hiding something from her.In police station Raman accept that he has done Vandita's accident infront of Ishita.Later Ishita asks Raman to tell her the truth Raman is not able to say truth to Ishita,then Ishita ask him to take swear on her that he has done Vandita's accident or no Raman just tells her that he has not done Vandita's accident and he is not involved this accident.Ishita support Raman against her Amma and Appa. Nidhi is the real culprit of Vandita's accident.She gets arrested.Adi and Ruhi have differences.Shagun had miscarried because of Nidhi.

Production

The show is produced by Ekta Kapoor under her banner of Balaji Telefilms. The show was first called Mera Tera Rishta Purana but later was changed to Ye Hai Mohabbatein. Cezanne Khan(who is well famous for his role of Anurag in Kasautii Zindagii Kay) was first approached to play the main lead opposite Divyanka Tripathi, but later Karan Patel was finalized to play Raman Bhalla. Ruhanika Dhawan was opted to play Ruhi Bhalla. The supporting cast was finalised with the names of Ali Goni, Shruti Bapna, Neena Kulkarni, Mihika Verma, Shireen Mirza, Shahnaz Rizwan, Sumeet Sachdev, Abhay Bhargava, Pankaj Bhatia, Gautam Ahuja amongst others. Anita Hassanandani Reddy and Sangram Singh were roped in to play the negative roles.After 7 years leap, Aditi Bhatia was finalized to play grown up Ruhi.Ruhanika Dhawan stayed back in show for playing Ishita and Raman's daughter Pihu. Abhishek Verma was finalized to play grown up Adi.Krishna Mukherjee was finalized to play Aliya who is Abhimanyu Raghav(Mani)'s niece and Adi's love interest.

Reception

Despite being on run for nearly two years it was still one of the highest rated show on Indian television in January 2016 when it was ranked third in TRP ratings chart.
