Description

Wing length 7-9ยท5 mm. Thorax greenish black.Abdomen black with large red or yellowish red patch patch.Two rows of thick spines on hind femora. Curved process on male hind trochanter.The male genitalia are figured by Hippa (1968). The larva is illustrated in colour by Rotheray (1994) ). See references for determination.
Distribution
Palearctic All Europe including the Mediterranean, the Caucasus and through Russia to the Russian Far East and Japan.Nearctic eastern parts.
Biology
Adults feed by grazing on anemophilous pollen grazed from surface of leaves. Larvae are normally associated with decaying tree sap, but have also been found in decaying human remains.
