Chen xuejun


Chen Xuejun (5 March 1919 – 4 July 2017) was a Thermal power engineering scientist, professor and former deputy president of Xi'an Jiaotong University. He graduated from the National Central University and got the bachelor's degree in engineering. He studied in the graduate school of Purdue University in the United States. He was an academician of CAS (Chinese Academy of Sciences) and Academician of the Third World Academy of Sciences.

Career Resume

In 1947, after he got a Master's degree in mechanical engineering in Purdue University and finished all the relevant Phd courses, he returned to China and acted as a professor of Jiaotong University. In 1980, he was elected to be the academician of CASChinese Academy of Sciences. Later in 1996, he was elected as the academician of the Third World Academy of Sciences.

From 1980 to 1984, he acted as the vice president of Xi'an Jiaotong University and the vice chairman of the Degree Evaluation Committee. From 1982 to 1985, he acted as the vice director of Chinese Discussion Committee of Chinese University Development Project of World Bank of the Ministry of Education of China and the head of engineering group. From 1981 to 1991, he was a member of the engineering evaluation group of the State Council's Degree committee and the subject group member of the National Natural Science Fund Committee. From 1988 to 1998, he acted as the vice director of the standing committee of Shaanxi Province People's Congress. From 1989 to 1998, he acted as the vice central chairman of Jiu San Society. In 1993, he was elected to be the standing committee member of the National People's Consultative Conference.

Professor Chen Xuejun created the first Chinese academic magazine on thermal energy engineering called "Special Issue on Thermal Engineering". For 11 years from 1948 to 1959, he successively published 10 books, such as "Gas Turbine", "Practical Steam Turbine Science", "Steam Power Plant", "Boiler Science", "Integral Boiler" and "Internal Process of Boiler". In 1952, Xuejun was responsible for preparing the first boiler specialty in Chinese universities and taught all the subjects of boiler specialty. In the beginning of the 1970s, professor Xuejun was responsible for establishing the water/air test platform, freon platform and high-pressure water/steam experiment platform. At the end of the 1970s, he was responsible for preparing the first Engineering Thermal Physics Research Institute of Chinese Universities. In 1990, he established the first State Key Laboratory of multiphase Flow in China.

Academy and Scientific Findings

He is the founder of Chinese multiple phase flow physics. He is also one of the authoritative scholars of this field in the world.

"The Gas and liquid two phase flow of inside the pipe and boiling heat transfer research" for which he was responsible won the third prize of the national natural science in 1988,

"the high pressure gas and water two phase flow and heat transfer test system" got the second prize of the national science and technology progress in 1992;

"the two phase flow of boiling fluid inside the curved pipe separation and heat transfer research" "the two phase flow of gas (steam) liquid fluid dynamics application basis research", "the instability of the two phase flow of gas and liquid inside the boiling pipe research" got the second prize of science and technology of the State Education Committee respectively in 1991, 1996 and 1998;

"the energy resource technology policy research" he participated won the first prize of national science and technology progress in 1988;

"the two phase flow boiling heat transfer and resistance feature research of boilers in large power stations" and "two phase flow of steam and liquid of new torpedo boiler reactor pushed by closed cycling thermal power and heat transfer and design method research and application" got the second prize of the national science and technology progress in 1990 and 1997 respectively.

He published many monographs such as "Two Phase Flow and Heat Transfer Principle and Application", "Volume 1 and Volume 2 of Two Phase Flow and Heat Transfer" (in English). He compiled three collections of articles on Proceeding of multiple phase flow and heat transfer, and they were published in America respectively in 1985, 1991, and 1994. He published over 300 academic papers at home and abroad, which had great influence on the development of this subject.

Mr. Chen Xuejun has done much work in the international and domestic academic activities and played great roles. He is the senior advisor and compiling committee member of American magazines such as "International Multiple Flow", "International Energy Resource, Environment and Economy" and Italian magazine "International Heat Science and Technology".

He was the organizing committee member or scientific committee member of many relevant series of international academic conferences held in America. Italy, Japan, France, Belgium and Yugoslavia. He chaired three international multiphaseflow and heat transfer academic conferences in Xi'an. He was the vice chairman of Shaanxi Provincial Science and Technology Association, the national committee member of Chinese Science and Technology Association, the standing member of China Nuclear society, China Power Engineering Society and China Energy Resource Research Society. Now he acts as the honorary director of China Nuclear Society, the lifelong honorary member of China Power Society and the chairman of China Engineering Thermal Physics Society. He is also the editor-in-chief of "Engineering Thermal Physics Journal" and the compiling committee member or advisor of "Nuclear Science and Engineering" "Mechanic Engineering Journal", "Power Engineering" and magazine "Heat Science" in English.

In his teaching and scientific research life for nearly 65 years, Mr. Chen Xuejun has taught over 2000 students in person and trained a great number of special talents in heat power engineering and boilers. Since China built a degree system, he has been the tutor of doctors of two doctor points such as thermal energy engineering and nuclear reactor engineering, and trained over 20 masters and nearly 30 doctors.
