XLAB d.o.o. is a software development company, founded in 2001 and based in Slovenia. XLAB focuses on cloud computing technologies and distributed systems. Its research department has participated in several European ICT research projects, most notably in XtreemOS, SLA@SOI and Contrail.

European Research

According to a 2012 European Commission study, XLAB was the third most important research organization in Slovenia in terms of European funds between 2007 and 2012, and the first private research organization. In 2016 it was placed 27th among Top 50 European SMEs in terms of Horizon 2020 signed grants; the only one from the EU-13 SME countries.

XLAB's main area of research is focused on the following fields:

  • Federated Cloud – Contrail, XtreemOS,
  • Available HPC Cloud Infrastructure – Fortissimo, MIKELANGELO, M2DC
  • Data-Intensive Cloud Applications – DICE,
  • Future networks and Internet – Mo-Bizz,
  • Energy efficiency and Smart Grids – FINESCE and eBadge,
  • Cognitive systems, sensors and robotics – Giraff+,
  • Trustworthy ICT – ACDC, SPECS, WITDOM and WISER.
  • In 2015 XLAB joined the Phishing Initiative, a consortium which includes several technology companies such as cyscon and Opera Software. XLAB's Device Monitoring is, as of June 2015, one of the four tools that the consortium offers freely to the general public, together with Opera Browser, a Firefox Browser plug-in and HitmanPro.

    XLAB contributes to the open source community by upstreaming parts of code, developed within the projects, e.g. contributions to Cloudify, providing open source libraries based on OASIS TOSCA for orchestrating and deploying big data technologies, within DICE project, integrations and application deployments in OSv and OpenStack within MIKELANGELO, support and contributions to cloud orchestration software ManageIQ with 25 merged pull requests, enhancements of the data collection service – Celiometer etc.

    Additionally, the company participates in other areas of research such as People's Security (Pandora, Odyssey), Digital Culture (MOSAICA), and Lifelong learning (Creatin, dCDDFlite and other Leonardo and Erasmus+ projects), as well as in several national projects in Slovenia (DEDI).

    Commercial

    XLAB commercializes a few solutions of its own, product of its internal and European funded research, including GIS solution Gaea+, medical visualization MedicView and most notably ISL Online.

    Remote desktop software ISL Online

    ISL Online is a software for secure cloud-based remote desktop control and live chat via the Internet. The software is available on the Microsoft Windows, macOS, Linux, iOS and Android, and is utilized by small individuals and companies as well as big and multinational enterprises worldwide such as Teleroute (Belgium), Telecom Slovenia (Slovenia), Azteca (Mexico), Canon Inc. (Japan), Swiss Post (Switzerland) and others, Japan being their strongest market.

    In 2016, the Japanese market research and consulting company, Seed Planning Inc., published results of the Japanese remote desktop market survey, ISL Online being No.1 remote desktop provider in Japan. with 44 percent share in the on-premises market.

    In September 2015, XLAB partnered with AVG Technologies to integrate ISL Online (desktop sharing technology) into AVG Business Managed Workplace 9.2 (remote monitoring and management software) in order to give Managed Services Providers the ability to easily access and control an unlimited number of unattended remote computers. In July 2016, ISL Light Client (remote desktop control software) was integrated into AVG Business CloudCare (cloud security solution).

    3D GIS software

    The 3D GIS software, Gaea+, and the application for location acquisition, Smart Locator, are used in mission-critical emergency response systems with massive datasets for visualization and analysis. Gaea+ extends the NASA World Wind Java core with features for real-time rendering of geospatial information. It has been integrated with emergency call centers (civil protection, police, fire departments, first aid) in Slovenia, Finland, Switzerland and Kosovo.
