Origins
The park dates from the early 1900s when the Ecclesiastical Commissioners decided to sell parts of the Wormholt and Old Oak Farms for development.
White City Lido
The open air swimming pool known as The White City Lido was built on the western edge of the park, on Bloemfontein Road. It designed by R Hampton Clucas, Borough Engineer, and was built by 60 unemployed men in six months. It cost £13,149 It opened on 4 August 1923. It was 150 by 75 feet (46 m × 23 m) with small lawns both ends, on a 250 by 150 feet (76 m × 46 m) plot. It held 337,500 imperial gallons (1,534 m3). The two shallow ends were 3 feet 6 inches (1.07 m) and the deep centre was 7 feet 3 inches (2.21 m).
It closed after the 1979 season and was replaced with an indoor pool in the Janet Adegoke Leisure Centre, which opened in 1980. This in turn was demolished in 2003.
