United originally played in the Rugby & District League and moved to the Central Northants Combination in 1964. After winning this league in 1966 and 1967 and the league cup in 1966, Woodford moved up to the United Counties League in 1970.

In 1978 Woodford withdrew from the UCL after their ground was sold off by the rail authorities who owned it, forcing them to move to the village recreation ground. They rejoined the Central Northants Combination, where they won the league and cup double in 1990, 1995 and 1998, as well as the title in 1992 and the cup in 1993. In 1998 they were able to rejoin the United Counties League and won promotion to the Premier Division in 2002. In the 2004–05 season, they reached the 3rd round of the FA Vase. In 2005–06 United won the United Counties League title on goal difference, gaining promotion to the new Southern League Division One Midlands.

The team were handed a relegation reprieve after finishing bottom in the 2013-14 season, accumulating just three points in the United Counties League Division One. As a result, they played in the same division in the 2014-15 campaign. They fared significantly better in the 2014-15 season, finishing 14th with 14 league wins and 46 points.

Manager Adam Knight left the club prior to the 2015-16 season and was replaced by former Daventry United and Daventry Town manager Darran Foster. However, Foster left Woodford United before the start of the season, in July 2015, to return to former club Daventry Town as their manager. Former Woodford United player Arron Parkinson, who captained the side that earned promotion to the Southern League and who subsequently had spells at Daventry Town and AFC Rushden & Diamonds, was appointed as Foster's successor on 4 August 2015. Former Daventry Town, Bedworth United and Banbury United manager Ady Fuller was appointed as his assistant.

Ground

The club's home ground on Byfield Road has a number of training pitches next to it which double as a car park during busy match days. The club received a grant from The Football Association to revamp their changing rooms, clubhouse and other facilities.
