The Wisconsin Department of Corrections is an administrative department in the executive branch of the state of Wisconsin responsible for corrections in Wisconsin, including state prisons. As of February 29, 2016, the department is administered by Secretary Jon Litscher. The DOC secretary is a cabinet member appointed by the Governor of Wisconsin and confirmed by the Wisconsin Senate. Divisions of the Wisconsin Department of Corrections include: the Division of Juvenile Corrections, the Division of Adult Institutions, the Division of Community Corrections and Division of Management Services. It has its headquarters in Madison.

In June 2008, over 120 minimum-security supervised inmate workers were used to assist in filling sandbags and flood cleanup during the flooding.

Division of Adult Institutions

The Division of Adult Institutions (DAI) oversees 20 adult facilities and the Bureau of Correctional Enterprises, the Bureau of Health Services and the Bureau of Offender Classification and Movement. The division also administers the Wisconsin Correctional Center System, which consists of 13 facilities statewide that assist inmates in reintegration to the community.

Male inmates entering the prison system first go to Dodge Correctional Institution before being given permanent assignments.

Division of Juvenile Corrections

The division has juvenile facilities.

The "type 1 secured juvenile correctional facilities" (JCI) include:

  • Lincoln Hills School
  • Prior to 1994 the state juvenile institution for girls was located at Lincoln Hills. After June 1, 2011, the students at Ethan Allen and Southern Oaks were consolidated into Lincoln Hills. Girls are held at a separate facility called "Copper Lake School," within Lincoln Hills.
  • Cadet Achievement Program (CAP)
  • Mendota Juvenile Treatment Center (MJTC)
  • SPRITE (Support, Perseverance, Respect, Initiative, Teamwork and Education) Program

    • The state also uses type 2 residential care facilities.

    Facilities that are now closed include:

  • Ethan Allen School for Boys (Delafield) - Closed on July 1, 2011.
  • Facility was converted from the Wisconsin State TB Sanitarium to a juvenile facility in April 1959.
  • Southern Oaks Girls School - Closed on July 1, 2011.

    • Division of Community Corrections

    One of the functions of the Division of Community Corrections is the operation and maintenance of the Wisconsin sex offender registry program.
