William Roberts Holt (31 May 1935– ) is a former New Zealand cricketer, who played two first-class cricket matches for Northern Districts from 1964–1965. A right-arm medium pace bowler, Holt took four wickets at 35.00, and scored 37 runs with the bat at 18.50. Holt also played ten matches for Northland in the Hawke Cup.

Early life and career

Holt was born in Whangarei, Northland.

Northland

Holt played his first cricket match for Northland against Waikato as part of the 1962/63 Hawke Cup on 24 November 1962. Northland batted first, reaching 163 all out from 72.5 overs, Holt being left not out on zero. He bowled 22 overs in Waikato's first innings, conceding 73 runs with no wickets. He fared better in the second innings, scoring 37 runs, however Waikato, batting second having scored 331, needed only 5.5 overs to win by ten wickets. On 14 December 1963, Holt faced Franklin at Bledisloe Park in Pukekohe. Holt scored 12 in Northland's first innings, before taking a single wicket from his 27 overs, boweled economically for 51 runs. Northland then played the touring Pakistani national team on 26 December 1964. Holt took the wicket of Mohammad Ilyas from his 22 overs, conceding 54 runs. With the bat, batting at number nine, he scored nine and 36 as Northland were forced to follow on, and were eventually defeated by ten wickets.

Northern Districts

On 4 January 1965 Holt played with Northland against Poverty Bay, scoring five with the bat, and taking a career best 6/80 from his 35 overs. He then faced Pakistan on 4 February 1965 playing for Northern Districts in Hamilton. Holt scored five as Northern Districts reached 381 all out. Holt then took the wickets of Abdul Kadir and the final wicket of Afaq Hussain, from his 16.3 overs, conceding 42 runs. Pakistan were forced to follow on, Holt bowling nine more overs for 21 runs before the match ended as a draw. Two days later, Holt played his second and last match for the Northern Districts, against Canterbury on 8 February 1965 in the Plunket Shield. Canterbury batted first, Holt bowling 21 overs, taking 2/77. He was then run out for 32. Northern Districts were forced to follow on, however the match ended as a draw before Holt was to bat again.

Return to Northland

Holt returned to Northland for a match of the Hawke Cup on 27 March 2008 against Bay of Plenty. Holt took 2/48 and scored 25*. On 26 November 1965, against Manawatu, Holt took 1/73 in the first innings, however managed only five with the bat and a wicket-less five overs for 15 runs in the second innings. Holt did not play another match for Northland until 19 November 1966, against Waikato. He scored ten runs with the bat, and took 1/25 as the match ended in a draw. Waikato and Northland met on 14 January 1967 at Victoria Square, however rain ended the match after 30 overs. They faced each other for a third time on 21 January 1967, Holt scored one and took 1/31. Holt played on final match for Northland, on 18 February 1967 in Gisborne. Holt was caught and bowled for a duck in the first innings, and bowled five wicket-less overs for 17 runs as the match was drawn.
