Whitelies.tv was the adult brand for the anti-tobacco education campaign for the state of Indiana and was launched in 2001, by the Indiana Tobacco Prevention and Cessation (ITPC). The state agency is charged (by the 2000 Indiana General Assembly) with using Master Settlement Agreement funds for the purpose of decreasing the high rate of tobacco use in Indiana. Whitelies.tv brand is no longer being used for Indiana's anti-tobacco marketing program.

History of WhiteLies.tv

The Indiana Tobacco Use Prevention and Cessation Executive Board was created to oversee funding from Indiana’s share of the 1998 Master Settlement Agreement. The Board created a plan for the funds, which was set to include media components, special youth features, settlement enforcement, cessation initiatives and community programs. On July 1, 2011 Indiana Tobacco Prevention and Cessation became part of the State Health Department. Tobacco reduction and protection from secondhand smoke exposure will now be further integrated into many existing State health promotion programs, such as cancer prevention, oral health, asthma care, maternal/prenatal health, cardiovascular health, and minority, women’s, and children’s health. The Tobacco Prevention and Cessation Commission will continue to serve Hoosiers in the fight against tobacco use and secondhand smoke exposure.

The WhiteLies.tv brand was the first brand created for media outreach. WhiteLies.tv grew out of the need to educate and expose the tobacco industry's lies about the dangers of their products. In March 2002, advertising for the brand focused on the tobacco industry’s greed and the harmful effects of tobacco use on Hoosiers. The campaign was designed to educate consumers on the tobacco industry’s documented manipulative marketing tactics and the negative health consequences of tobacco use on Indiana.

The Whitelies.tv media campaign was present throughout Indiana and included television, radio, outdoor billboards, and newspaper ads and public relations. Today, the Quit Now Indiana brand is being promoted throughout state. Efforts are continuing to support the tobacco-free message. Examples of the current advertising can be found on the QuitNowIndiana.com website. There are currently over 65 community partners across Indiana trained to extend and maximize the state’s campaign budget.

Quit 2 Win Contest

Quit 2 Win is a statewide promotional contest designed to encourage Hoosiers using tobacco products to make an attempt to quit. This promotion is part of the larger statewide WhiteLies.tv cessation campaign. In 2008, Zachary Joley of Ft. Wayne, Indiana was awarded the grand prize of $2,500 for quitting tobacco use. The contest awarded another $2,500 winner in 2009 to a 20-year-old mother who had been smoking since she was 9.
