The song features a music video and was also re-recorded in 1999 on the album Remembering White Lion (also released as "Last Roar" in 2004) and a live version was released on the album Rocking the USA. The re-recorded and live versions were both released as promo and later iTunes singles. In 2004 an acoustic version of "When the Children Cry" was recorded and featured on the "VH1 Classic Metal Mania: Stripped" compilation.

In early 2003, just before the beginning of the Iraq War, it was covered by Christian indie rock group Seventh Day Slumber. In 2008, the song was sampled by Sabac Red on "As Children Cry".
