History

The hospital was founded by Dr Aubrey Bristow and Mr Ghassan Alusi, two consultants from St Bartholomew's Hospital, London and opened after a complete rebuild in 2010. The consulting rooms are based at 9 Harley Street and were opened in 1997. 9 Harley Street also houses a cardiac screening unit, general practitioners and radiology. A new Toshiba CT installed in 2017 offers much lower doses of radiation and the latest modalities for both pathology and screening such as virtual colonography. The hospital buildings were previously used as staff accommodation for The John Lewis Partnership, providing female staff from outside London with a safe place to live whilst they worked in the Oxford Street store. It is close to other central London private hospitals including The Princess Grace Hospital, King Edward the VII and The London Clinic.

Weymouth Street Hospital was originally run under a joint management contract with BMI Healthcare. This was terminated by PHG in 2015 since when the group has flourished under CEO Andrew Barker. New group offices were opened at 30 Nottingham Place in 2016, and work is underway to extend the hospital with new operating theatres incorporating robotics, intensive care and a subsequent increase in bed capacity. The hospital is particularly strong in the self pay market, offering competitive package prices yet providing all patients with luxury single rooms. It is recognised by all UK private medical insurers as well as being used by a number of overseas embassies. The hospital has its own kitchens and prides itself on its food as well as its personal nursing care. Many of its consultants have worked at the hospital since opening delivering integrated care. The hospital is regularly at the top of league tables based on patient feedback.

The Howard de Walden Estate owns and manages the land where the hospital and consulting rooms are based, and ensures that the traditional buildings are well-maintained and in keeping with the surrounding architecture. The Harley Street area has been noted as a medical centre since the 19th Century, and it is estimated that there are over 1500 medical specialists based there. The area is well-known both nationally and internationally for its highly experienced medical professionals, many of whom have trained and worked at recognised London teaching hospitals such as Great Ormond Street, St. Bartholomews, Charing Cross, Royal Hospital Chelsea and Westminster.
