Hampton was born in Memphis, Tennessee. He studied at Trevecca Nazarene University from 1996 to 1998, and he then went on to receive a B.A. in psychology and a minor in music from the University of Alabama at Birmingham, in 2000. He was part of the worship staff of a Birmingham church for seven years.

Career

Hampton was also a member of a group called the Trevedores during his years at Trevecca, for whom he sang lead. He joined the Gaither Vocal Band following. His first recording with them was the album Give it Away released in 2006. They then released the albums Christmas Gaither Vocal Band Style and Lovin' Life in 2008. As of early 2014, the line-up is David Phelps (1st tenor), Hampton (2nd tenor), Adam Crabb (lead), Todd Suttles (baritone), and Gaither (bass). Now Wes did a radio interview and it was released and how he got into the Gaither Vocal Band was his father in law Mark Means used to work with Bill Gaither, Marks's dear friend Karen Bathauer, still worked with Bill. David Phelps was leaving (don't worry he came back) and they weren't going to announce that he was leaving until the spot was filled, but Karen had Wes send her a tape and she gave it to Bill personally and Wes didn't think anything was going to happen but one day he was driving home with Andrea and he got this call from this number but he didn't answer because he didn't know the number. When he got home he checked his voice mail and it was Guy Penrod wanting him to come to his house. Wes claims he still has this audio file on his laptop. Bill kept trying to stump Wes with all the older songs from the vocal band but Wes knew everything and after about 8 weeks he finally got to meet Bill.
