Career

She replaced Judy Bailey as the primary female anchor, who had held the position for 18 years, after Judy left some time after changes to the presenter format of the 6pm bulletin meant one anchor doing the whole bulletin. That decision was reversed and put back to two presenters after Bailey left (mainly due to a fall out with TVNZ over her treatment publicly, regarding her pay). Prior to this, Wendy had been at TVNZ for two years as the "swing" presenter for all the One News bulletins.

Previously, Petrie was the weekend presenter for 3 News before going to Canada to become a newsreader for the CTV News Channel as well as a substitute newsreader on the CTV morning programme Canada AM. She stayed there for three years before returning to New Zealand to start with TVNZ.

During her time in Canada, she made guest appearances on the nationally syndicated Travel World Radio Show, hosted by veteran travel broadcasters Stephen Pickford and Willem Bagchus, in which she discussed and promoted her home country of New Zealand.

On 11 September 2001, Petrie was the first one to contact 3 News about the plane which had just crashed into the North Tower of the World Trade Center in New York. She appeared on the 6 o'clock news later that night to report on the days events.

Petrie has been seen since early 2004 in almost every One News programme, including the main broadcast. Described as a "disaster magnet," she was filling in over Christmas on One News when the Boxing Day tsunamis happened. She was filling in for Kate Hawkesby (who presented One News Tonight) on the night of the London Bombings and presented live coverage of the event that night. In September 2009, Petrie was co-hosting TVNZ's Breakfast as a major earthquake and tsunami in the South Pacific caused widespread destruction in nearby Samoa. She was also flown to Valencia to cover the 2007 America's Cup.

Personal life

Petrie is married to company director Ross Peebles. They have three children, Addison, Liv and Zach.
