We Are Your Friends is an upcoming 2015 American music drama film starring Zac Efron, Wes Bentley, and Emily Ratajkowski. The film follows a young man who struggles to become a prominent music producer in the electronic dance music and nightlife scene. The film will be released on August 28, 2015 in the United States.
Young Cole Carter dreams of hitting the big time as a Hollywood disc jockey, spending his days and nights hanging with buddies and working on the one track that will set the world on fire. Opportunity comes knocking when he meets James Reed, a charismatic DJ who takes the 23-year-old under his wing. Soon, his seemingly clear path to success gets complicated when he starts falling for his mentor's girlfriend, jeopardizing his new friendship and the future he seems destined to fulfill.

Plot
Cole (Zac Efron), a 23-year-old DJ who struggles in the electronic dance music scene, has dreams of becoming a major record producer. Eventually, older DJ James (Wes Bentley) begins to mentor him, but Cole makes a connection with James girlfriend, Sophie (Emily Ratajkowski). When Coles relationship with Sophie blossoms and his friendship with James begins to break down as a result, he is forced into difficult decisions over his future.

Production
On June 6, 2014, Zac Efron entered negotiations to star in a untitled film about a DJ which was to be directed by Max Joseph. The film will be Josephs debut. On July 31, 2014, Emily Ratajkowski joined the cast of the film which by then had been given the title We Are Your Friends and had a start date of August 18 announced for principal photography. Jon Abrahams joined the cast on August 5, Alicia Coppola on August 14, and Wes Bentley on August 18. Jonny Weston, Shiloh Fernandez and Alex Shaffer are also expected to appear in the film. In late September, the film cast background actors. In November 2014, Warner Brothers acquired the films North American distribution rights. Two weeks later, StudioCanal announced that international distribution had been sold in several markets.
Filming
Filming began on August 18 in the San Fernando Valley. Joseph co-wrote the adapted screenplay with Meaghan Oppenheimer based on a Richard Silverman story. Working Title Films partners Tim Bevan and Eric Fellner are co-producing the film, which is financed by Studiocanal. Silverman is an executive producer. Studiocanal is the worldwide distributor.
