History

Throughout its history Wayne State University has been known as a commuter school. Few students would spend time at the study areas and lounges. Limited dorm space available before the 1960s was in the original Student Center, a multi-story building with a ground-floor cafeteria, at the corner of Cass and Putnam streets. However, beginning in the 1960s, the school has seen an increase in the number of students living on campus. The university decided to build the new Student Center Building in 1963.

The Student Center Building has undergone some renovations in 1970. More housing options became available on the Main Campus and there was an increase in the number of students living on campus. The Student Center became important for those living on campus since it provided many important services to them. In 2006, Wayne State University began planning for a major renovation of the Student Center. Construction for renovating the Student Center began in May 2014 and is planned to be completed by July 2015.

2014-2015 Renovations

Wayne State University’s Student Center renovation began in May 2014. The expected final date for the completion of the renovation is planned for July 2015. The Student Center has not had any changes or advancements done since the last renovation of the building was done in 1970.

The designs of the renovations were done by Neumann/Smith Architecture. Approximately 100,000 square feet of space will be renovated to add more space for the increasing student population. The expected budget for the renovation is estimated to be at $26.5 million. The Student Center is a part of the $170 million development plan of Wayne State University’s construction project in 2015.

The development of the Student Center is aimed to have four renovated floors mostly consisting of new dining options There will also be new dining areas, furniture, carpeting, and a ballroom located on the second floor. On the third floor there will be a designed student organization collaboration area. Throughout the building there will be new and more lounging and study areas throughout the building.

The renovations’ main goals are to make a welcoming environment for the staff and students of the university, to provide more natural lighting by constructing many new windows, the rebuilding of older areas of the building, and providing more space for students, faculty, and visitors.
