History

The library was founded in 1939 by the Wauconda Women’s Club and became a township library in 1962. It became a public library district in 1988. Its newest location building opened in 1997. The library earned the Distinguished Building Award in 1998 from the American Institute of Architects.

Wauconda’s recently renovated and remodeled library is the library of the future, built to accommodate the changing ways that people learn, seek information and engage in community activities.

Awards

The Wauconda Area Library was named Library of the Year in 2005 by the NSLS, a consortium of 650 academic, public, school, and special libraries in north suburban Cook, Kane, Lake and McHenry Counties.
