Planned expansion

The convention center is planning a $1.6 billion expansion that includes 440,000 square feet (41,000 m2) of exhibition space in a new five-story building to be located at the site of the Convention Place transit station, part of the Downtown Seattle Transit Tunnel. It is the most expensive and largest project underway amidst Seattle’s historic construction boom. The station is expected to close to buses in 2017 in preparation for the opening of the Northgate Link Extension and construction is expected to begin shortly thereafter, with a potential opening in 2020.
