  • History

Throughout the 1960s and 70s, there was a total of 13 elementary schools in the WLS district. Into the 1960s, each was K-6, after which students attended either Washington Junior High School or Jefferson Junior High School for grades 7-8 before attending Whitmer High School. Later, all 13 of these elementary schools funneled into the Jefferson Junior High building, which was 7th grade only. After 7th grade, students went to the Washington building, which was 8th grade. The Whitmer building was 9th-12th grade, with the Vocational facility being completed in the 1970s.

Closings, consolidations and alternative usage for some of the buildings has brought the total count of the elementary schools to 8. Horace Mann was closed after the 1978 school year and was consolidated with Lincolnshire the following year. Lincolnshire was closed after the 83/84 school year and has since become an administration building. The Westwood building is still in use for adult education.

The 5 other original elementary schools were:

  • Lincolnshire Elementary (CLOSED - after 1983 - 1984 school year) Now an Admin building
  • Westwood Elementary (CLOSED - after 1984 - 1985 school year)
  • Trilby Elementary (CLOSED - after 2009 - 2010 school year)
  • Horace Mann Elementary (CLOSED - after 1978 - 1979 school year)
  • Hopewell Elementary (CLOSED - after 1980 - 1981 school year)
  • I believe that Horace Mann was closed after the 1980 - 1981 school year since I went there in the 1979 - 1980 and 1980 - 1981 school years.
