It is one of two "low energy" built hospitals in the United Kingdom, and is the most northerly General hospital in England. is part of Northumbria Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust, the two other acute hospitals in the trust being in North Tyneside and Hexham. The hospital's Accident and Emergency Department is now a 24-hour walk-in centre, following the opening of the Northumbria Specialist Emergency Care Hospital in Cramlington.
