WXIS (103.9 FM is a radio station serving the Tri-Cities region of Johnson City/Kingsport/Elizabethton/Bristol in Tennessee and Bristol in Virginia. The WEMB, Inc. outlet operates with an ERP of 6 kW and is licensed to Erwin, Tennessee, while its 92.3 MHz/6w translator is licensed to Johnson City, Tennessee.

History

WXIS was a Top 40 outlet known as "X-104" until it shifted to Rhythmic in 1999 as "Jammin 92.3/103.9", with the slogan "Where Hip Hop Lives". It then became "Jamz", with the inclusion of mostly adult contemporary music to its format. Despite its semi-spotty signal coverage (which is why the 92.3 signal is included in the slogan), it did well with its Rhythmic Contemporary format. The 92.3 signal serves Johnson City, Tennessee, while the 103.9 signal covers the station's hometown of Erwin, Tennessee.

On September 12, 2016 WXIS went dark with the sound of a heartbeat. On September 26, 2016, WXIS flipped to all-news as "News 103.9 LiveWire Radio". The station includes traffic and weather in a format it calls "On The Eights" (borrowing the name from The Weather Channel's Local on the 8s), "rip-and-read" headlines from outsourced commentators, and updates from professional and university sports at 15 and 45 minutes into every hour.
