WSA Winnipeg was announced as a USL Premier Development League expansion franchise on December 13, 2010. The team is part of the larger World Soccer Academy and is supported by Mondetta, a well-recognized brand in Canadian professional sports, as one of its primary sponsors.

The team played its first game on May 28, 2011, a 1–0 loss to Thunder Bay Chill, but achieved their first victory the following day, 3–0 in the return game against Thunder Bay. The first goal in franchise history was scored by Kenny Sacramento.
