History

The WKHM callsign has a long Jackson tradition and is based on the names of the original owners of WKHM AM (Fred Knorr, Harvey Hansen, and Bill McCoy). The first WKHM-FM operated on 106.1 and is now WJXQ.

The current WKHM-FM signed on in 1995 and originally programmed easy listening music, one of the last stations in Michigan to program such a format. "Easy Relaxed 105.3" played a mixture of adult contemporary hits, soft oldies, and smooth jazz. The "easy" format was dropped in early 1998 (moving to sister WIBM 1450 AM for a short time until that station went sports) and K105.3 was born.

Programming

The station starts each day with "Craig Russell and the Morning Hustle." Russell is a veteran of several other Michigan radio stations including northern Michigan's legendary WKPK and, most recently, WFGR in Grand Rapids. On June 3, 2015, the long running "Big Dog in the Morning" show aired its last edition, as the "Big Dog," Jamie McKibbin, took on a new roll as general manager of Jackson Radio Works.

From 10:00 until 1:00, Scott Clow hosts the Midday Cafe.

At 1:00, former morning show host Jamie "The Big Dog" McKibbin takes over and stays until 4:00.

J-Rod steps in at 4:00 and stays until 7:00. He hosts "The 80s Rewind," in which people call in after an 80s song is played and guess the song and who it is by; "My Three Songs with J-Rod," in which a caller gets to pick three songs he or she wants to hear back-to-back-to-back; the "Duh Story of the Day," which usually involves a story about a dumb criminal, etc.; and "The Drive at Five," where a caller calls in and "blows" (screams, howls, yells, etc.) the "5-o'clock work whistle."

Finally, at 7:00, the station airs Zach Sang & the Gang.

Weekends feature Backtracks USA (the 90s) with Kid Kelly on Saturday mornings, American Top 40 with Ryan Seacrest on Sunday mornings at 9 am, and Open House Party on Saturday and Sunday nights.

HD Radio

WKHM-HD2 airs a sports talk format branded as "ESPN 101.9" with programming from ESPN Radio.

On May 1, 2014 WKHM-FM launched a country music format on its HD2 subchannel, branded as "Hot Country 101.5," relayed on translator W268CA 101.5 FM Jackson, Michigan. The country format is now heard on WIBM 1450 AM and WKHM-HD3 imaged as "95.9 The Power Cow," with 95.9 being the frequency of WIBM's new FM translator. Programming on 101.5 remained a simulcast of the country format as of late June 2016.

WKHM-HD3

WKHM-HD3 airs a sports talk format branded as "ESPN 101.9" with programming from ESPN Radio.
