WAAL ("The Whale") is a classic rock radio station broadcasting at 99.1 MHz and licensed to Binghamton, NY and is under ownership of Townsquare Media. WAAL is the oldest FM radio station in the Southern Tier. During weekday mornings and weekday afternoons, traffic reports are announced after every classic rock ride.

History

In the early 1970s, it was playing a progressive rock format. In the mid 1970s WAAL was known as WAAL Stereo FM 99. In the late 1980s and early 1990s, it was known as The Hot FM, which played Top 40. WAAL was acquired by Citadel Broadcasting in 1998 from Wicks Broadcast Group. Citadel merged with Cumulus Media on September 16, 2011.
