Bivin enlisted in the United States Navy in 1940.
Awarded the Navy Cross
Bivin was killed in action on board Salt Lake City (CA-25) on 12 October 1942 during the Battle of Cape Esperance, Seaman First Class. He received a posthumous Navy Cross.
Namesake
The USS Bivin (DE-536) was launched 7 December 1943 by Boston Navy Yard; sponsored by Mrs. Ella Florence Bivin, mother of Seaman Bivin; and commissioned 31 October 1944, Lieutenant Commander M. Kelly in command.
