Ventas, Inc., a real estate investment trust (REIT), invests primarily in real estate serving the United States healthcare industry. The company acquires, develops, leases, disposes and manages healthcare real estate. As of 2014 it is a Fortune 1000 corporation.

History

The company was founded in 1998 as a spin-off of Vencor, a company founded by Bruce Lunsford, who would later be an unsuccessful Democratic candidate for Governor of Kentucky in 2007 and an unsuccessful nominee for Senator from Kentucky in 2008.

According to Richard Daft and Carol Hymowitz, then-CEO Debra Cafaro anticipated the 2008 financial crisis. Her insistence on building cash reserves before the crisis ensured that the company made it through the crisis successfully.

Ventas acquired the real estate investments of Ardent Health Services in 2015.
