Vehicle registration plates of Monaco are unusually small (a few centimeters smaller than an American license plate), and are composed of four numbers and/or letters. The plates are colored blue font on a white background and have the Monagasque coat of arms on the left side with the year number (on the rear plate only) to attest that tax has been paid. All plates starting with "000" belong to the Prince’s family.
"Principauté de Monaco" is written at the bottom of the plate.
Before 1979, the color of the plates was white on blue, without borders. In previous years, plates were all-numeric; now, both letters and numbers are used.
For motorcycles, the plates are composed of two letters and two digits.For provisional cars, the plates are colored white font on a red background. They later have series of nnnn WW MC in same background before 1979.For pending cars, the plates have series of nnnn WWn MC, in same background before 1979.For diplomatic plates, the plates are prefixed "CC" or "CD", and lettered blue and green, respectively. Italian consulate general have the CC in middle.For International Atomic Agency and the International Hydrographic Bureau vehicles, the plates are colored green font on a green background. Before 1979 they are white font on green background instead.For tourist cars, the plates are colored red font on a white background. The plates are prefixed "TT".For rental cars, the plates only prefixed "V". They are possibly discontinued.For Royal Family cars, the plates only prefixed "MC". They have different coat of arms. These plates existed before 1979. Now they were replaced by format three numbers only.For official cars, the plate format was XXnXFor dealer cars, the plate format was XXXnA plate in 1997 given to the Prince was "AN 1997".
