Vashishth Narayan Singh (1 January 1939 - 16 January 2008) was an Indian politician from the Bihar state. He served as the Chairman of Zila Parishad, Begusarai from 14 November 1980 to 13 November 1988 (Indian National Congress). He later became the acting president of Begusarai District Congress Committee in 1989. He was popularly known as Chairman Sahab.

Early life and education

Vashishth Narayan Singh, was born in Ramdiri village of the Matihani constituency in Begusarai district. His father Ishwari Singh was a traditional farmer and his mother, Kagwati Devi was a homemaker. He was interested in politics since his childhood. Shri Singh attended Patna College, University of Patna, from where he earned his Bachelor of Arts degree. He then opted for Master of Arts from the Patna University but quit it to join politics.

Early politics

Shri Singh had joined active politics in the year 1962. He was the leader of student youth organization, and had contributed in the formation of political organizations on panchayat, block and district level. He became the president of Matihani Block Congress Committee in 1972. From 1972 to 1974, he directed the Indira Brigade as a custodian. In the early months of 1977, he was made the treasurer of Begusarai District Congress Committee.

Peak time

Vashishth Narayan Singh was sent to jail for protesting against the arrest of Indira Gandhi in the year 1977. The very next year, in 1978, he encouraged the Farmers Rally organized in Delhi as a district leader. During the governance of Janata Party at centre in 1979, he had fought the by-elections as an Indian National Congress leader from Matihani constituency, but lost to Deokinandan Singh of All India Trade Union Congress by a very small margin. He again participated in the organized farmers rally and led his district when Indira Gandhi came to power in 1980. On 14 November 1980, he got elected as the president of Zila Parishad, Begusarai.

Later years

He completed his tenure as the president of Zila Parishad, Begusarai on 13 November 1988. He was also the convener of Congress' centenary celebrations held in 1985. Later he became the acting president of Begusarai District Congress Committee in the year 1989. Getting elected as an administrator by Bihar Pradesh Congress Committee, he handled the workload of party in Bhagalpur, Samastipur and Khagaria. Shri Singh also gave his contributions as a district president to the grassroot front organizations of Congress party like Bharat Krishak Samaj and Seva Dal.
