Valentina Caniglia is an Italian-American cinematographer and director. Her work has garnered a number of awards and nominations. In 2012, she was invited to join the European federation of Cinematographers IMAGO and the Association of Cinematographers.

Early life

Caniglia was born and raised in Naples, Italy. Her father was an avid film enthusiast. When she was 7 years old, he bought her a Kodak film camera. She first learned of cinematography at the age of 8 when her father showed her two films, The Conformist (il Conformista) directed by Bernardo Bertolucci and The Godfather directed by Francis Ford Coppola.

At the age of 17, she moved to London, where she attempted to start a career as a cinematographer. Three years later, she moved to New York City and began her career working for feature films, commercials, music videos and documentaries.

Career

Caniglia worked on the film Pomegranates and Myrrh, winner of the Golden Dagger for Best Cinematography. The film premiered in USA at Sundance Film Festival, and received the Audience Award at Doha Tribeca Film Festival awarded by Robert De Niro. Among other films she worked on are Shade Of Love, winner of best cinematography award at the Hoboken International Film Festival, Fred Won't Move Out, nominated for best cinematography by the AIC IMAGO award starring Elliott Gould, Return To Sender starring Bill Cobbs directed by Ravi Malhotra and the critically acclaimed film Madeline's Oil for which Caniglia won an award for Best Cinematography at Louisiana Film Festival in 2015.

Caniglia has worked as a cinematographer for HBO, Canal+, Showtime TV, RAI, Voyage TV, and Netflix where she filmed underwater cinematography in the Caribbean, Italy and Egypt. She has lensed numerous nationally aired commercials for British Airways, Ford Motor Company, Nike, Novomatic, United Healthcare, Konami, GBX Shoes, which received the Telly Award. Caniglia has worked on music videos for The Roots, The Stain, Aesop Rock and Soho. In 2014, Valentina Caniglia worked on the film Kelly & Cal starring Juliette Lewis.

Her cinematography work has been featured in various magazines, including American Cinematographer, Indiewire, Filmmakers, The New York Times, Elle, New York Magazine, Hollywood Reporters and Variety.

Caniglia was named one of Playlist “10 Cinematographers to Watch".
