Vaðlaheiðargöng is a tunnel under construction in Iceland, located in Northeastern Region along Route 1, just east of Akureyri. It will have a length of 7,400 m (24,278 ft), and replace a 21 km section of route 1 including the Víkurskarð pass. The estimated cost of the tunnel is ISK 11.5 billion(2013 prices).

The tunnel was planned to (and official should) open at the end of 2016 However, a large leak was found in early 2015 and large supports need to put in place. Adding to the problems, a large volume of hot water was also found and needs to be constantly pumped out of the tunnel. Tunnelling should finish by the end of 2016 open sometime in 2017.
