Uzbekistan State University of World Languages (USUWL) (Uzbek: O'zbek Davlat Jahon Tillari Universiteti, Узбек Давлат Жахон Тиллари Университети Russian: Узбекский государственный университет мировых языков) is one of the leading universities in Tashkent city and in Uzbekistan. The Importance of language is essential to every aspect and interaction in the modern world. Language is the most important tool in contributing the knowledge and information among people and countries. Therefore, the world needs highly trained professionals, who mastered different languages, which would lead to the development of any country. "Uzbekistan State University of World Languages" has set the goals of upbringing highly trained philologist, and cover the demands for the professionals on philology field. "Uzbekistan State University of World Languages" was first established by the Decree of President of Republic of Uzbekistan Islam Karimov in the year of 1992 on 12 May, number 401 under the base of "Republican Russian language and literature pedagogics Institute" and "Tashkent state foreign languages pedagogics institute". In recent years, the "Uzbekistan State University of World Languages" has become the best language teaching university of Uzbekistan and there are more than 15 languages which are taught at the ""Uzbekistan State University of World Languages", which are: English, German, French, Spanish, Chinese, Russian, Arabic, Italian, Korean, Japanese, Iranian, Malaysian, Polish, Indian, Turkish, Greek and Indonesian. There are 8 faculties which give lessons in different subjects of philology.

About

"Uzbekistan State University of World Languages" was established after the Independence of Republic of Uzbekistan in the year of 1992 by the Edict number 401 of the President of Republic of Uzbekistan Islam Karimov. "Uzbekistan State University of World Languages" was firstly opened under the base of two merely popular universities of Uzbekistan as the fully function faculty, the parent universities for the "Uzbekistan State University of World Languages" were "Republican Russian language and literature pedagogics institute" and the "Tashkent state foreign languages pedagogics institute". After some years of work on educational field of Uzbekistan the "Uzbekistan State University of World Languages" was reopened as the fully operating institute and was recognized under the "Ministry of Secondary-specialized and higher education of Uzbekistan" and currently involved with training of specialists which are recognized world-wide. The diploma which is obtained at the "Uzbekistan State University of World Languages" is considered to be as the approval of higher education graduation in Uzbekistan and in some other international countries. "Uzbekistan State University of World Languages" is fully supplied with the licenses by the "Ministry of Secondary-specialized and higher education of Uzbekistan" which means that the institute can fully operate in the Republic of Uzbekistan. Nowadays, it is estimated that there are more than 5000 students who are currently involved with the studies at the institute, who study for their bachelor's degrees. The studies at the "Uzbekistan State University of World Languages" are held in two types, which is set by the government of Uzbekistan. The first type of studies at the institute is set to be the studies on the contract basis. All the tuition fees are set by the standards of Uzbek government, and every student studying on the contract basis at the institute must pay the fee on time. The second type of the studies at the "Uzbekistan State University of World Languages" is set to be the studies on the grant basis. All the talented students are awarded by the sponsors of the institute with the grants, which allow the students to study for free. The length of studies at the institute is set to be 4 years for obtaining the bachelor's degree, and 2 years for gaining the master's degree. The teaching staff of the institute is estimated to be more than 500 professional teachers, and most of them are considered to be the professors on their related subjects. The study programs and textbooks are provided for the students, according to the higher educational standards of Republic of Uzbekistan and the study process is patrolled by the "Ministry of Secondary-specialized and higher education of Uzbekistan". The administrative part of the institute is the same with other national universities and institutes of Uzbekistan. The head of the institute is considered to be the rector, and the university has two more vice rectors. All the faculties are controlled by the deans, and the departments are controlled by the professor teachers respectively. There are two academic lyceums which are given under the "Uzbekistan State University of World Languages", and the university fully controls the educational procedure at those lyceums. "Uzbekistan State University of World Languages" nowadays cooperates with huge number of national and international universities, as well as many institutions and companies which are based on philology. In the history of its existence the "Uzbekistan State University of World Languages" had two main campuses. The first campus was given to the institute after establishment, and it was old, which would not fit the international requirements. Therefore, the state of Uzbekistan decided to build and give the new campus for the institute, which is supplied with the modern technologies, and which can cover the needs of students. The new campus of the institute became more attractive than the previous one, and it was built in the way of new Uzbek building style.

New Campus

The new campus of the "Uzbekistan State University of World Languages" was created after reconstruction of the old campus of the institute and after building of new construction in the area of the institute. For fully building the new campus Uzbek government has invested about 106.8 billion sums, which leaded to the huge development of the institute. After the reconstruction and building works the new campus was ready for consumption in the year of 2013 on 13 January. Government representative, university staff, professors, guests and the students attended in the opening ceremony of the campus. New campus was built in the new style of Uzbek architecture, and was colored to the white colors and the entrance wall of the institute tells to the visitors about the institute. After the reconstruction, the university obtained the new and big building which was able to hold 2200 students at one time. Meanwhile, new sports complex was built within the frameworks of the institute. Instead of this, two study buildings, one information-recourse center, student's hostels and the canteen were reconstructed. In addition, there was built the hotel for 20 people, which is considered to meet the guests from other countries. The information center of the "Uzbekistan State University of World Languages" is one of the biggest libraries among the institutes and universities of Uzbekistan which is supplied with the computers with the Internet access. It enables the students to connect to the any network related to their studies, and aids them a lot with the studying process.

Rectorate

"Uzbekistan State University of World Languages" has the same administrative system as in the other universities of Uzbekistan. The head of the institute is the rector, who is the main decisive person at the institute. The whole university is controlled by the rector, and meanwhile the rector is patrolled by the "Ministry of Secondary-specialized and higher education of Uzbekistan. Currently, the rector of the "Uzbekistan State University of World Languages" is Rakhimov G'anisher. At the university there are 4 more representative of the higher administrative units of the institution, and they are given as follows: "The vice rector of the university on the educational purposes" Nurmatov Akbar Normatovich". "Uzbekistan State University of World Languages" vice rector on the spiritual and cultural issues Mamadov Norpolat Suyarovich. The vice rector at the "Uzbekistan State University of World Languages" on the issues related to the scientific researches is Boqiyeva Gulandom Hisamovna. And the vice rector of the "Uzbekistan State University of World Languages" on the financial and economic issues is Abdullayev Suyun Artikovich. Each representative of the administrative unit of the university, is given their own tasks, and they patrol the university on their related professions.

Faculties

"Uzbekistan State University of World Languages" mainly focuses on the philology and there are 7 faculties which are set at the university. All of the faculties are opened to cover the high demands for the professionals on philology sphere. The faculties which are currently located at the university are listed as follows:

  • First English language faculty
  • Second English language faculty
  • Third English language faculty
  • Roman-German philology faculty
  • Russian philology faculty
  • Theory and practice of interpretation faculty
  • International journalism faculty
  • Moreover, all the three faculties which are related to the English language are fundamentally different, and they provide the students with different knowledge.

    First English language faculty

    The 'First English language faculty' at the "Uzbekistan State University of World Languages" was first established in the year of 1992 on 12 May by the Edict of President of Republic of Uzbekistan Islam Karimov. The history of the faculty is directly linked to the history of the university as it was opened in the same year with the establishment of the university, under the base of two universities which are "Republican Russian language and literature pedagogic institute" and the "Tashkent State Foreign Languages Pedagogic Institute". The main purpose of the faculty is training the professionals who would contribute their knowledge in the way of development of Republic of Uzbekistan. Even though, the faculty is mainly focused on teaching English language, there is another second language which must be studied by each student, and it is given by the rules of the university. The list of the second languages which are taught are given as follows, and the student can choose which language to learn: French, German, Arab, Spanish, Turkish and Chinese. The faculty operates by the laws of Republic of Uzbekistan, by the edicts of the Republic of Uzbekistan, by the Decrees of "Cabinet of Ministers of Uzbekistan ", by the Edicts of "Ministry of Secondary-specialized and Higher Education in Uzbekistan" and by the inner rules of the "Uzbekistan State University of World Languages". The "First English language faculty" currently cooperates with some international companies and institutions, in order to supply the graduates with working positions. The partners of the faculty are given as follows: British Council in Uzbekistan, American Embassy in Uzbekistan, "ITEC" program of Indian Embassy, educational program of Malaysian Embassy in Uzbekistan and with the "TEMPUS" program of European Union. There are three main departments which are currently located at the faculty, and they are: "English language phonetics and phonology department", "English language grammar and history department", "Professional lexica department". The "First English language faculty" is the oldest faculty of the "Uzbekistan State University of World Languages" and is the best known destination among the interested applicants in the university.

    Second English language faculty

    Structure of the "Second English language faculty" is the same with the "First English language faculty" of the "Uzbekistan State University of World Languages". As the both faculties are mainly focused on English language, and both train professional philologists on the English language field. Both of the faculties share similarities as they act based on the by the laws of Republic of Uzbekistan, by the edicts of the Republic of Uzbekistan, by the Decrees of "Cabinet of Ministers of Uzbekistan ", by the Edicts of "Ministry of Secondary-specialized and Higher Education in Uzbekistan" and by the inner rules of the "Uzbekistan State University of World Languages". However, the main differences between the faculties could be found. "Second English language faculty" is younger establishment rather than the "First English language faculty" as it was opened only after the 10 years. Which says that "Second English language faculty" of the "Uzbekistan State University of World Languages" is opened in the year of 2002 under the base of "First English language faculty". However, after some years the faculty was set as the fully functioning faculty in the year of 2009. Nowadays, there are about 1461 students who are currently involved with the studies at the faculty. The teaching staff of the faculty is more than 100 people and most of the teachers have their scientific degrees on related subjects. The number of professors at the faculty is estimated to be 61. The faculty offers the right to choose one course as the second language, rather than English. There are four main departments at the faculty, which are given as follows: "Practical subjects on English language", "Lexicology of English language", "Stylistics of English language" and "Natural subjects".

    Third English language faculty

    The "Third English language faculty" of the "Uzbekistan State University of World Languages" is the same with its structure and the educational materials with its two ancestors, which are "First English language faculty" and "Second English language faculty". The "Third English language faculty" also acts by the laws of Republic of Uzbekistan, by the edicts of the Republic of Uzbekistan, by the Decrees of "Cabinet of Ministers of Uzbekistan ", by the Edicts of "Ministry of Secondary-specialized and Higher Education in Uzbekistan" and by the inner rules of the "Uzbekistan State University of World Languages". All of the faculties are opened in order to train professionals of English language and they all hold some similarities. Meanwhile, there are some differences between these three faculties too. "Third English language faculty" is considered to be the youngest English language related faculty of the "Uzbekistan State University of World Languages", as it was first established by the Decree of the President of Republic of Uzbekistan Islam Karimov number PD-1875 on the topic of "Developing the systems of learning foreign languages" in the year of 2012 on 10 December, and by the Edict of President of Republic of Uzbekistan Islam Karimov number PD-1971 on the topic of "Developing the "Uzbekistan State University of World Languages"", in the year of 2013 on 23 May. Nowadays, there are about 1204 students who are involved with the studies at the "Third English language faculty", and in a short period of time the faculty became very famous among the young generation of Uzbekistan, as it gives essential practical and theoretical knowledge about the English language. Currently, there are no any graduates from the faculty, as it was established only three years ago. The students can obtain the bachelor's degree from the faculty, from the following branches which are: "Teaching of philology and foreign languages (English language)" and "Foreign language and its literature (English language)". Students can obtain their master’s degree from the faculty, by the branches which are given as follows: "English language" and "Literature" (English literature). There are three main departments at the "Third English language faculty" and they are given as follows:

  • English language and English literature – focuses on grammar of English language and the literature of English language
  • Learning the English language in an integrated way – teaches the students to the essential parts of English and the subjects at the department are unusual and complicated
  • Theoretical subjects – the biggest department at the faculty, as it covers all the other subjects which are: History, Native language (Uzbek), Physical Education, the second language (One of: French, Spanish, Arab, Turkish, Indian people, Chinese, Japanese, Malaysian and Italian languages)
  • Roman-German philology faculty

    "Roman-German philology faculty" is one of the youngest faculties of the "Uzbekistan State University of World Languages". Roman-German languages are widely needed all around the globe, and it is essential for any country to have the specialists in those language, in order to build international diplomatic connections between the "Roman-German language" speaking countries. In order to cover the demands for these needs and specialists in Republic of Uzbekistan, the "Roman-German philology faculty" was established at the "Uzbekistan State University of World Languages", by the edicts of the President of Republic of Uzbekistan Islam Karimov. Before the establishment of the faculty, the "Roman-German philology" was taught as the separate language faculties which were "German philology faculty", "French philology faculty", "Spanish philology faculty", which means that the "Roman-German philology faculty" united the three faculties under one administrative unit. The first Edict of the President of Republic of Uzbekistan Islam Karimov was made in the year of 2012 on 10 December with the number PD-1875 about the "Developing the systems of foreign languages teaching in Uzbekistan". After that Islam Karimov made another Decree, which was the reason for the creation of "Roman-German philology faculty" at the "Uzbekistan State University of World Languages". The second edict was made in the year of 2013 on 23 May which was under the number of PD-1971, and was about the "Development of "Uzbekistan State University of World Languages"". "Roman-German philology faculty" fully operates by the laws of Republic of Uzbekistan, by the edicts of the Republic of Uzbekistan, by the Decrees of "Cabinet of Ministers of Uzbekistan ", by the Edicts of "Ministry of Secondary-specialized and Higher Education in Uzbekistan" and by the inner rules of the "Uzbekistan State University of World Languages". There are three departments which are currently located at the "Roman-German philology faculty" of the institute, and they are given as follows:

  • German philology theory and practice – the department focuses on training of specialists with the knowledge of German language and German philology, the students at the department are taught in two big aspects, which are theoretical and practical aspects.
  • French philology theory and practice – the department focuses on training of specialists with the knowledge of French language and French philology, the students at the department are taught in two big aspects, which are theoretical and practical aspects.
  • Spanish philology theory and practice – the department focuses on training of specialists with the knowledge of Spanish language and Spanish philology, the students at the department are taught in two big aspects, which are theoretical and practical aspects.
  • The unique about the "Roman-German philology faculty" of "Uzbekistan State University of World Languages" is that, here the students can enlarge not only their theoretical knowledge about the philology of specific language, but also their qualification by the practice. There are 805 students who are currently involved with the studies at the "Roman-German philology faculty", and there are more than 100 teachers at the faculty. Most of the teachers have their scientific degrees on their related subjects and languages, and 58 of them are considered as the professors.

    Russian philology faculty

    "Russian philology faculty" of the "Uzbekistan State University of World Languages" was established to train the specialists of Russian philology and the literature. The graduates of the faculty are working as the representatives of Republic of Uzbekistan in various countries, who speak in Russia. The "Russian philology faculty" operates with the standards set by the laws of Republic of Uzbekistan, by the edicts of the Republic of Uzbekistan, by the Decrees of "Cabinet of Ministers of Uzbekistan ", by the Edicts of "Ministry of Secondary-specialized and Higher Education in Uzbekistan" and by the inner rules of the "Uzbekistan State University of World Languages". All the textbooks and the study process is set by the "Ministry of Secondary-specialized and Higher Education in Uzbekistan" and approved by the Uzbek government. There are two main departments at the "Russian philology faculty" of the "Uzbekistan State University of World Languages", and they are given as follows:

  • Russian philology – the department is mainly focused on teaching the Russian language’s grammar rules to the students. Department is also focused on enlarging the practical skills of the students by the speaking classes.
  • Modern Russian and international literature department – is focused on giving right information and knowledge about the modern literature of Russian language an about the literature of other countries.
  • Theory and practice of interpretation faculty

    In order to cooperate with the non-native speaking countries or corporations, any government needs professional interpreters, who could be the bridge among the two sides. After the Independence of Republic of Uzbekistan needs for the professional interpreters increased rapidly, as Uzbekistan became one of the developing countries of the world. And the government of Uzbekistan has set the number of tasks in order to solve this problem. For accomplishing with this task, the "Theory and practice of interpretation faculty" was established in the year of 1994. Nowadays, the faculty is not so popular among the applicants, however, the needs for the interpreters in Uzbekistan are growing year by year. There are 4 main branches for the bachelor's degree which are offered by the "Theory and practice of interpretation faculty", and they are given as follows: English language, French language, German language and Spanish language. Which means that the faculty trains professional interpreters who could deal up with four languages. The master’s degree program was opened at the faculty only in the year of 2005. In addition to this, there was opened Chinese language branch for the master’s degree program in the year of 2008. There are 381 students who are currently involved with the studies at the "Theory and practice of interpretation faculty", and there are 102 teachers and professors who give knowledge to the students. "Theory and practice of interpretation faculty" fully operates based on the laws of Republic of Uzbekistan, by the edicts of the Republic of Uzbekistan, by the Decrees of "Cabinet of Ministers of Uzbekistan ", by the Edicts of "Ministry of Secondary-specialized and Higher Education in Uzbekistan" and by the inner rules of the "Uzbekistan State University of World Languages". All the textbooks and the study process is set by the "Ministry of Secondary-specialized and Higher Education in Uzbekistan" and approved by the Uzbek government. "Theory and practice of interpretation faculty" nowadays cooperates with many international companies, and institutions, in order to supply its students with the constant positions at work after graduation. The sponsors of the faculty are given as follows: "Moscow State Lingua University", "Perudja University" (Italy), "Beijing Chinese language and culture Institute", "Seoul Chun Ang University", KOICA International corporation, "Deli University" (India), JICA International Corporation (Japan), British Council in Uzbekistan and many other institutions. There are 6 main departments which are currently located at the faculty, and they are given as follows:

  • Interpreting theory and practice – gives essential knowledge about interpreting techniques and enlarges the theoretical knowledge by practice
  • Chinese language theory and practice – teaches to the Chinese language by the theoretical and practical points of view. Teaches the techniques of interpreting form Chinese language.
  • Intensive teaching of the second language – teaches the second language which could be chosen by the student, in a short period of time, by intensive and fast pace of teaching.
  • East languages – techniques of speaking and using the "Eastern languages", and the similarities between the "Eastern languages".
  • Modern pedagogic technologies – gives essential knowledge about the techniques and technologies of teaching languages and philology.
  • Information and communication technologies – teaches how to use the information technologies, as the right and proper tool for the interpreting work.
  • Even though, the faculty is not as popular as the other faculties of "Uzbekistan State University of World Languages" it plays huge and essential role in development of philology in Uzbekistan.

    International journalism faculty

    Developed states pay big attention to the improvement on international journalism in their countries. As the international journalism plays big role in having right and proper information about the world. After the Independence of Republic of Uzbekistan, the urgent needs for the journalists on international levels occurred and spread widely across the Republic. The only way was opening whole institution which would focus on training of international journalists, which would make contributions to the development of Uzbekistan. In order to cover these high demands for the international journalists, the "Cabinet of Ministers of Uzbekistan" decided to open new faculty under the "Uzbekistan State University of World Languages" which would mainly focus on development of journalism in Uzbekistan and in Central Asia. Therefore, in the year of 1999 on 26 February the "International journalism faculty" under the "Uzbekistan State University of World Languages" was established by the Edict of "Cabinet of Ministers of Uzbekistan", number 88 on topic of "Training the journalists and develop the system of journalists training". The bachelor's degree at the faculty can give the opportunity for the applicants, to study at the "Journalism" branch, and master's degree program offers two branches, which are "International Journalism" and the "Sport Journalism". The "International journalism faculty" of "Uzbekistan State University of World Languages" nowadays cooperates with many international institutions and the companies, which are interested with the professionals on the journalism field. The sponsors and partners of the faculty are given as follows: "Moscow State University", "Nordestern University" (US), "International Journalism Institute of Germany", "Beijing Chinese language and culture institute", "Seoul University", "Chun AngUniverstiy" (Southern Korea), JICA International corporation, "Kazakhstan National University" and many others. The "International journalism faculty" fully operates by the laws of Republic of Uzbekistan, by the edicts of the Republic of Uzbekistan, by the Decrees of "Cabinet of Ministers of Uzbekistan ", by the Edicts of "Ministry of Secondary-specialized and Higher Education in Uzbekistan" and by the inner rules of the "Uzbekistan State University of World Languages". All the textbooks and the study process is set by the "Ministry of Secondary-specialized and Higher Education in Uzbekistan" and approved by the Uzbek government. Currently, there are 204 students who are involved with the studies at the faculty, and there are more than 50 teachers at the faculty, 25 of them are professors. There are two main departments which are located at the "International journalism faculty" of "Uzbekistan State University of World Languages", which are given as follows:

  • Theory and practice of international journalism – gives essential knowledge about the theoretical part of journalism, and gives opportunity of practicing the theoretical knowledge.
  • Audio-visual journalism and communication – teaches to the new techniques of journalism in higher levels.
  • Academic lyceums

    Nearly, all of the higher educational institutions of Uzbekistan are linked with the academic lyceums and the colleges. There are two main academic lyceums which work under the name of "Uzbekistan State University of World Languages", and they both are related to the studies of foreign languages in Tashkent. The main purpose of academic lyceums in Uzbekistan, is to encourage the young generation to enter the universities and show right ways to enter the higher educational facilities of Uzbekistan. The two academic lyceums which are given under the name of "Uzbekistan State University of World Languages" are: "First academic lyceum under the Uzbekistan State University of World Languages", "Second academic lyceum under the Uzbekistan State University of World Languages".

    Second academic lyceum under the Uzbekistan State University of World Languages

    "Second academic lyceum under the Uzbekistan State University of World Languages" is the institution of secondary-specialized education, which fully operates in the base of the laws of Republic of Uzbekistan, by the edicts of the Republic of Uzbekistan, by the Decrees of "Cabinet of Ministers of Uzbekistan ", by the Edicts of "Ministry of Secondary-specialized and Higher Education in Uzbekistan" and by the inner rules of the "Uzbekistan State University of World Languages". All the textbooks and the study process is set by the "Ministry of Secondary-specialized and Higher Education in Uzbekistan" and approved by the Uzbek government."Second academic lyceum under the Uzbekistan State University of World Languages" receives only the students who have successfully completed the secondary study program, which is 9 years long, and only those who have passed from the examinations successfully. There are number of branches for the interested applicants offered by the "Second academic lyceum under the Uzbekistan State University of World Languages". "Second academic lyceum under the Uzbekistan State University of World Languages" is mainly focused on teaching the subjects like: mathematics, foreign language, native language and literature. The students are expected to receive the knowledge on the fields which are: economy, engineering, business, marketing, management and etc. After the graduation, the successful students are granted with the diplomas, which are recognized in Uzbekistan, and this document allows the students to continue their studies at the higher education institutions of Uzbekistan or set their career as an interpreter. The lessons at the "Second academic lyceum under the Uzbekistan State University of World Languages" are taught in three languages, which are: Uzbek, Russian and English. The main foreign languages at the "Second academic lyceum under the Uzbekistan State University of World Languages" are: English language (Students are expected to receive acceptable IELTS, and the German language (DSD). There are some additional languages which are taught as the second language, and they are given as follows: French language, Japanese language, Chinese language, Korean language, Spanish language, Arab language and Turkish language, which are taught from the second course of the studies. The study length at the "Second academic lyceum under the Uzbekistan State University of World Languages" is set to be 3 years.
