About

Urbana is one of ten high schools in the Frederick County Public Schools system of Frederick County, Maryland.

Urbana's school year is divided into two ninety-day semesters, each split into two grading periods. Urbana operates on a block schedule with four ninety-minute blocks each day. Students may earn up to four credits per semester, totaling eight by the end of the year. It is therefore possible to complete, for example, both French 3 and 4 or Calculus AB and BC within the same school year. It is also possible to take additional courses online through the Frederick County Virtual School during the regular school year or summer.

Students

Approximately 75% of UHS students attend 4-year colleges following high school; another 20% go on to 2-year colleges, with the remaining students attending vocational schools, going directly into the work force or joining the military.

As of the 2012-13 school year, Urbana High School had a student population of about 1,486. 7.4% received free/reduced meals, and 7.1% received special education services. The ethnic demographic for that year was approximately: 0% American Indian/Alaskan Native; 10% Asian; 4% African American; 11% Hispanic; 0% Hawaiian/Pacific Islander; 77% White; 6% 2+ Races.

Advanced Placement

The Advanced Placement (AP) program is a curriculum sponsored by the College Board and offers standardized courses to high school students that are generally recognized to be equivalent to undergraduate courses in college. Urbana offer Advanced Placement courses in 24 subjects, and in 2011, its students took 956 AP exams in 24 subjects, with 74% earning scores that qualify for college credit.

    The International Baccalaureate (IB) is a European-based educational foundation and was introduced to Urbana in 2004. All IB Diploma candidates are required to engage in the study of Languages, Sciences, Mathematics, and Humanities. 95% of Urbana's IB diploma candidates earned the full diploma. Urbana also allows non-diploma candidates to enroll in individual IB courses and earn an IB certificate.
