History

UrbanSocial was founded in 2003 by Jim Strong and Anna Cooney. It was originally aimed at a younger audience who considered themselves sociable but found that existing online dating services weren’t targeted to them.

One of UrbanSocial’s founding principals was to offer offline dating opportunities through events. In 2006 UrbanSocial grew the events offering and launched Grapevinesocial specialising in a Wine Tasting dating alternative within the speed dating market. UrbanSocial also launched a TV events section, where members received opportunities to be included in niche TV shows.

UrbanSocial was one of the first dating sites to offer a white label dating solution built upon their own platform. Adopters of this dating platform included The List (magazine), MyVillage and Manchester.com. In August 2011 UrbanSocial withdrew from the white-labeling market to focus on developing the UrbanSocial group.

In 2014, the website launched the UrbanSocial dating blog and in 2015 the website launched in Australia, Ireland, and the USA.

Accreditations

UrbanSocial were voted the top online dating service in the UK by the Sun newspaper in 2004. More recently they won Best New Dating Blog at the 2014 UK Dating Awards (UKDAs), and were runners up for Best Commercial Dating Blog at the 2015 UKDA's.
