History

Unplugged Cities was founded in Minneapolis, Minnesota on January 2005. This company was founded after the city of St. Louis Park, Minnesota agreed to partner with Unplugged Cities in the Parkwifi project that was supposed to provide wireless internet service throughout the city.

As part of the foundation of the company Unplugged Cities purchased the Minnesota portion of Pixius Communications to provide a base of support staff until Parkwifi was fully operational. The Minnesota assets purchased from Pixius were formed into a company named MetroProvider, which offers dial up, DSL, webhosting and T1 services throughout the Twin Cities area.

Wireless Strategy

Unplugged Cities has a strategy of helping cities set up municipal [wifi] networks. Unplugged Cities will generally help the city plan, build and then ultimately manage the wireless network. Although Unplugged Cities is responsible for the network after its full launch all of the actual equipment, and infrastructure. This means that the city can ultimately switch wireless network managers if they feel that they need to and prevents Unplugged Cities from having to remove wireless equipment for whatever reason.
