History
Lionel W. McKenzie is credited with putting the Department of Economics on the track toward excellence in research. McKenzie arrived at Rochester in 1957 having been recruited specifically to improve the department and to establish a Ph.D. program. Two of the first hires under his chairmanship were Stanley Engerman and Ronald W. Jones who are still at Rochester. The first two Ph.D. degrees were awarded in 1962 to Akira Takayama and Emmanuel Drandakis. Since then the Rochester Economics Department has become well known for the quality of its research and Ph.D. students, particularly in economic theory and macroeconomics.
