History

Saigon University of Medicine and Pharmacy was first established in 1947, during the World War II, as a subsidiary of Ha Noi University of Medicine and Pharmacy (French: Faculté de Médecine et de Pharmacie de Hanoi, Section de Saigon). Until then, Ha Noi University of Medicine (French: Ecole de Médecine et de Pharmacie de Plein Exercise de l'Indochine) is the only medical school in Indochina [3] .

It was located at 28 Testard Street, Saigon (now Vo Van Tan, Ho Chi Minh City). The first class began 1947, with 12 students in total. The following year, the entering class increased to 32. Professors Huard and Daléas were the first two faculties appointed to the university. The training, which took place at school as well as hospitals in Saigon area, followed the six-year standard medical program in France [4].

In 1961, Saigon University of Medicine and Pharmacy were divided into Saigon University of Medicine and Saigon University of Pharmacy. In 1962, Saigon University of Dentistry was established. The three universities operated independently. However, after the country reunification in 1976, the institution was reformed and refined when the three schools were merged to establish the University of Medicine and Pharmacy of Ho Chi Minh City.
