History

In 1813, a cholera epidemic struck the city, resulting in the deaths of thousands. Concurrently, a military battalion was relocated to Ujjain in Madhya Pradesh from Secunderabad. During this period, a doli bearer named Suriti Appaiah, accompanied by his colleagues, visited the Mahakali Devastanam in Ujjain to intercede for the populace's welfare. They vowed that if the community were spared from the epidemic, they would erect a statue of the goddess in gratitude. Following their return from Ujjain, Appaiah and his group fulfilled their promise by installing a wooden idol of the goddess in Secunderabad in July 1814.
