According to some scholars the Uar later merged with the Xionites, to form the Avars (or Varchonites) who later settled in Pannonia,.

Origin

The ancestors of Uar were the population of Post-Kelteminar stage of Suyurganovo culture, which according to most researchers were ethnically Ugrian tribes.

By the end of the 1st millennium BCE, elements of the Uar had reportedly joined an Iranian-speaking nomadic tribe, the Aorsi.

Etymology

The ethnonym "Uar" is usually considered to be derived from one or two sources:

  • the Ugra region, and/or
  • Warr, an Iranian word for "river"
