Vehicle tolling around the world is going through a technological shift as it relates to the collection of toll fees. On roadways around the world, Radio-frequency identification (RFID) transponders, supporting transceivers, antennas, and video cameras are the current standard. This technology was invented during the 1970s and was implemented throughout the 1980s. Today, the dominant tracking technology is centered around the mobile internet by way of smart phones and other devices utilizing GPS technology. These devices are beginning to permit tolling authorities a new channel of communication with drivers and assist in the authorities' ability to collect tolls. There are a number of mobile applications that are available for drivers to use as a way to manage their toll accounts as well as some applications that actually make the toll collection for toll authorities.
