It is located in the province of Eastern Finland and is part of the Northern Savonia region. The municipality has a population of 2,694 (31 March 2016) and covers an area of 543.17 square kilometres (209.72 sq mi) of which 156.15 km2 (60.29 sq mi) is water. The population density is 4.96 inhabitants per square kilometre (12.8/sq mi).
