History

Mail service has existed in Turkmenistan since the time of the Russian Empire. However, since October 1991, the country organizes its own postal service functions.

The government of Turkmenistan exercises rigid control over mail service. Parcels and letters are usually opened by custom authority officials and mail delivery is unreliable. Businesses use international courier services, such as Federal Express and DHL, but in 2005, these firms were closed by the government.

Building

In Ashkhabad on April 1, 2011 a "Turkmenpochta" office, and nearby, the building of the Ministry of Communications (Turkmenistan) was constructed.
