The Turkish national final to select their entry, the 1986 Eurovision Şarkı Yarışması Türkiye Finali, was held on 15 March at the TRT Studios in Ankara, and was hosted by Erkan Yolaç.

Four songs competed in the final. An "expert" jury of sixteen people decided the winner. However, at the end of voting, two of the four songs received eight votes each, causing a deadlock. To break the tie, the head of the jury ended up having his vote counted twice.

After the tiebreaker, the winner was "Halley," performed by the quintet Klips ve Onlar (Sevingül Bahadır, Gür Akad, Emre Tukur, Derya Bozkurt and Seden Kutlubay) and composed by Melih Kibar with lyrics by İlhan İrem.

At the close of the voting the song had received 53 points, placing 9th in a field of 20 competing countries. It was the highest ranking Turkey had received in the Contest up to that time.
