Tumkur (Tumakuru) is an industrial city located in the state of Karnataka. Since 28 August 2010, Tumakuru has been accorded the status of a corporation city. It is situated at a distance of 70 kilometers northwest of Bengaluru, along National Highway NH4 and NH206. It is the headquarters of the Tumkur district. Newly constructed food park is inaugurated by honourable Prime Minister of India Mr. Narendra Modi in recent time and city is announced as a smart city.

Etymology

Etymologically, Tumakuru is believed to have been mutated possibly from "Tumbe ooru" due to the abundance of Tumbe huuvu, a kind of flower, or Tamate ooru due to the folk musical percussion instrument Tamate, that might have been used most here. Also, it is called as the coconut city.

Another story says that during the rule of cholas Gulur was their capital, since Tumakuru is at high elevation the guards used to be there on any hill with Tumaki (a kind of drum) and used to make sound in case of any alerts; hence the name Tumakuru.Center government have approved the request to rename the city in October 2014 and Tumkur is renamed (along with other 12 cities) to "Tumakuru" on November 1, 2014. Tumkur is also famous for Shree Siddaganga mutt located 5 km towards HITECH city flyover,its giving free education and staying facility for more than 9000 childrens. Karnataka Rathna Shree Shivakumara mahaswamy is also known as walkable god is the president of this mutt. The prayer during morning and evening time is beautiful to see.

Demographics

As of 2011 India census, Tumakuru had a population of 305,821. There are more than 5,00,000 people are live in corporation limit. At the 2001 census, males constitute 52% of the population and females 48%. Tumakuru has an average literacy rate of 75%, higher than the national average of 59.5%: male literacy is 79%, and female literacy is 70%. About 11% of the population is under 6 years of age. The most common language in the city is Kannada.

Description

The cultivated products consists chiefly of coconut, millet, rice, pulses, arecanut and oil seeds. The chief industries are the manufacture of coarse cotton cloths, woolen blankets, ropes, watches (Hindustan Machine Tools), WIPRO, TVSE, SCII and Karmobiles Ltd. which is merged with Rane Madras. In 2011 this city is proposed to become a Municipal Corporation of Karnataka. we can also see some major Retail companies are also expanding their existence in tumkur such as Reliance and Megamart. you will find Reliance trends, foot print and digital in the centre of city.And its also called as Education city and coconut city.The India Food Park (IFP), an integrated food processing facility located in the Tumkur was inaugurated by the Indian prime minister Narendra Modi in September 2014.

Transportation

Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation, KSRTC has a divisional office situated in Tumkur City. The city is well-connected to Bengaluru and other cities in the state by KSRTC buses.Volvo buses are available for the city, Bengaluru. Frequent buses are available connecting other taluks and towns of the district. Two National Highways NH-4 & NH-206 pass through the city.

Railways also play a major role in connectivity. The citys Railway Station comes under South Western Railway Zone (India) and was constructed during the British period and has been renovated recently. It is located in centre of the city close to the Bus stand and the Town Hall. It is located in the Bengaluru-Hubli main line.

The city buses are also available for transportation within the city by KSRTC. Popularly known as Sri Siddaganga Nagara Sarige, named after the holy place, Siddaganga.There are more than 100 buses transporting in the city.

The nearest airport to Tumkur is Bengaluru International Airport which is around 80 kilometres from the city.

Media

Most of Kannada and English dailies are circulated in the city.The main local Kannada newspaper is Praja Pragathi.

Tumakuru has a private FM radio channel Siddhartha situated at SSIT campus,broadcasting in Kannada language.
