Biography
Formed in Budapest, 1986, Tukros has remained true to their beloved traditional folk music. Regular trips to the source of this tradition, to the Hungarian, Roma, Romanian villages where music is still a part of everyday life, ensure the strength and authenticity of this ongoing love affair. Since their first release in 1996 the band established itself as renowned performers. From 2000 on they have been publishing albums under their own label, which met with the appreciation of the public and the profession. In 2001 the band was awarded the distinction of ‘Young Masters of Folk Arts’. Just as Tukros absorb music from its organic context, the also create a living ambience through regular concerts, camps, club events, teaching. They play as a band, or accompanying dance groups. Proponents of the Dance House movement, they are regular guests at their annual meeting since 1990, and other notable folk music festivals and events. They also feature year by year at the unique yet popular Valley of Arts festival. Apart from numerous domestic shows, they have toured across Europe, in the USA (2008), and Australia (2000; 2001; 2011).
The Music
Tukros are gifted and spirited proponents of traditional folk music. "There is no need to improve it, - explains Tukros' viola player Peter Arendas, - only to play it as authentically as possible." Collecting the music is as much part of the creative process as recording albums: the musicians breathe in the milieu of the villages and gain inspiration. They are not merely collectors and performers; during summer camps and clubs Tukros strive to hand over this valuable heritage, as well as get the crowd dancing.
The lineup reflects the standard pattern of the genre: four strings, a cimbalom, vocals:
Attila Halmos - first violinist, voice
Peter Arendas - viola
Gergely Koncz - violin and viola
Endre Liber - cimbalom, viola, vocals
Andras Lelkes – double bass
