"True Love" is the final single of new material by English vocalist Robert Palmer. The single was released in 1999 as the leading and sole single from the album Rhythm & Blues. The song was written by Alan Mansfield, New Zealand-born singer-songwriter and pianist Sharon O'Neill and Palmer. Neill had previously co-written Palmer's 1994 album track "Love Takes Time" from the album Honey.

Background

Released as the lead single from the Rhythm & Blues album, the track was commercially unsuccessful, just like the album, where the track only peaked at #94 in the UK for a total of two weeks.

The single was Palmer's first release in four years since the 1995 single "Respect Yourself". In the time between, Palmer had regrouped with the supergroup The Power Station for the first time since 1985. The group released the album Living in Fear and the single "She Can Rock It" in 1996.

The single was Palmer's last single release, discounting the 2003 remix of Palmer's best known hit song "Addicted to Love".

Release

The single was released as a CD single mainly in the UK only and various European counties, using a "Radio Edit" of "True Love" as the main version. Two other tracks were included, an "Extended Mix" of "True Love" and the non-album b-side "Big Shot".

A promotional CD single was also created, featuring the "Radio Edit" of "True Love" as the only track.

"True Love" was produced by Italian sound and mix engineer Pino Pischetola and Palmer, as was the entire Rhythm & Blues album.

The song was later included on the 2006 four disc compilation Rock Box.

Promotion

A music video was created for the single, featuring Palmer singing the song amongst various clips including a couple dancing. The video was shot in black and white whilst the lyrics to the track were added to scroll along the bottom of the video.

Since being uploaded to YouTube in mid-2006, the video has gained approximately 128,000 views.

In the Netherlands, Palmer performed the song on the TV show Laat de Leeuw. Palmer also performed the song on another European TV show.
