Troy Paino

Troy D. Paino (born December 28, 1962) arrived at the University of Mary Washington July 1, 2016 as its 10th and current President. Prior to coming to UMW, Paino served for six years as president of Truman State University in Kirksville, Missouri. Previously, he was Truman State’s provost and vice president for academic affairs, and he also served as dean of Winona State University’s College of Liberal Arts.

Since his arrival at Mary Washington, Paino has helped shape the future of the university as a force for positive social change. His charge is to produce citizens ready, willing and able to address the greatest challenges facing our democracy and world. A personable, student-focused leader, Paino is deeply committed to Mary Washington’s public liberal arts and sciences mission of providing equal amounts of academic excellence and social uplift. During his inaugural year at UMW, he was featured in a YouTube series called “The New Guy” where he explored as a newcomer the university, as well as the surrounding area and all that it has to offer.

Dr. Paino earned his bachelor's degree in history and philosophy from Evangel University in Springfield, MO, his juris doctor from the Indiana University Robert H. McKinney School of Law in Indianapolis, IN, and his master's and doctorate in American Studies from Michigan State University in East Lansing, MI. His 1997 Ph.D thesis was "The end of nostalgia: a cultural history of Indiana high school basketball during the Progressive Era."

Prior to his work in academia, Paino worked for three years in private legal practice. He has served on the history faculties of Winona State University, Truman State University and the University of Mary Washington. His teaching and scholarly interests include American higher education, 20th-century cultural and social history, and American legal history. He has written extensively on the history of American sports and published a book, The Social History of the United States: 1960s, in 2008.

Paino served as President of Truman State University from May 2010 to June 2016. While at Truman, he created several humorous videos including a holiday feature called "T-Pain Misses You" that gained national attention from forums like like Good Morning America, Right This Minute, and The Huffington Post.
