Etymology

Trientalis is derived from the Latin triens, and is an allusion to the height of the plant, which is one third of a foot, or four inches (10.16cm) high. Latifolia is derived from two words in Latin, latus, meaning 'broad' or 'wide', and folius, meaning 'leaved'. Latus-folius – 'broad-leaved'.
