Traffic Inspector is integrated gateway management software for Microsoft Windows developed by Smart-Soft. Traffic Inspector is a multifunctional gateway solution that focuses primarily on network security, web access control and traffic accounting.

Contents

The program is deployed at the edge of a corporate network and is thus capable of controlling all Internet-bound network traffic. Traffic Inspector runs on Windows XP, Windows Server 2003, Windows Vista, Windows Server 2008, Windows 7, Windows Server 2012 and Windows 8.

Traffic Inspector is accompanied by two extension modules: Traffic Inspector Anti-Virus and Traffic Inspector Anti-Spam. Administration Console for Traffic Inspector is implemented as an MMC snap-in providing for a familiar management environment. The current version of Traffic Inspector is version 3.0.1.825 (released 11 September 2014). A free 30-day fully functional evaluation version of Traffic Inspector is available at the official website.

Features

Notable Traffic Inspector features include:

  • Network security. Traffic Inspector firewall protects LAN networks from hacker attacks and unauthorized access from the Internet.
  • Antivirus protection. Traffic Inspector Anti-virus scans web / email traffic and removes malicious and potentially hostile programs.
  • Web Access Control. Traffic Inspector can be configured to block unwanted web sites / inappropriate web content and enforce other web access policies for LAN users.
  • Spam filtering. Traffic Inspector serves as a front-end to a corporate email server by filtering out spam and unwanted email.
  • Advanced routing. Traffic Inspector enables sharing of a single Internet connection among multiple LAN computers, controls traffic flows with a bandwidth limiter / traffic prioritization, provides policy-based routing capability for advanced routing decisions, and can automatically fail over to a backup Internet connection.
  • Traffic accounting. Detailed information about Internet usage by LAN users can be viewed in the form of flexible reports.
  • Billing. Traffic Inspector can be used for billing LAN users for Internet access and consumed traffic.
  • Web caching and proxies. Traffic Inspector provides a number of integrated proxy servers (HTTP, SOCKS).
  • Content filtering. Traffic Inspector implements regexp-based URL filtering, URL categorization, filtering by file MIME type, etc.
  • Active Directory Integration. The Automatic Import feature allows importing users from Active Directory.
  • User management. Logon hours, authentication methods, web access policies, bandwidth limits, billing plans, etc. are conveniently configured on a per-user or per-group basis.
  • Modules

  • Traffic Inspector Anti-Virus powered by Kaspersky, a gateway anti-virus module developed as a joint project with Kaspersky Lab.
  • Traffic Inspector Anti-Spam powered by Kaspersky, a gateway module that provides spam recognition services to Traffic Inspector.
  • Alternatives

Several open-source and proprietary alternatives are available including Kerio Control, Microsoft Forefront Threat Management Gateway, WinGate and others.
