Founded in 1999 by publishing giant Reed Elsevier with the launch of totaljobs.com (now totaljobs), the company currently employs around 400 people. In April 2012, Reed Elsevier sold Totaljobs Group to StepStone, a subsidiary of Axel Springer Digital Classifieds, in a £110 million deal.
Totaljobs
Totaljobs was the first recruitment site created by Totaljobs Group in 1999. It is now one of the UK’s leading jobs boards. Totaljobs attracts around 6 million unique visitors and generates over 2 million applicants every month. In December 2010, totaljobs launched its salary checker that calculates the average wage of a person working in a particular job. In May 2012 they launched Jobs Confidential, a blog aimed at recruiters, followed by Inside Job, a blog for the job seeking audience, in May 2013. In the same year they also launched the Learning Zone for graduates and those in search of new courses. November 2014 saw Totaljobs introduce its mobile jobseeker app. The company’s social media presence includes profiles on Twitter, G+ and Facebook.
CareerStructure.com
CareerStructure.com is a specialist job board for jobseekers and recruiters in the construction sector. This includes built environment, electrical and engineering jobs. It was launched in 2006 as a UK jobsite, but as of 2008 CareerStructure.com also advertises jobs abroad. CareerStructure.com provides advice to professionals working in the construction sector, such as developments within the wider sector. September 2009 saw the formation of the Green Zone, which displays green development careers in the construction industry.
Caterer.com
Caterer.com specialises in the hospitality and catering sector, offering positions from head chef to cruise ship roles. The site is heavily involved with the wider UK hospitality community, providing The Hospitality Employment Index and The Best Employers in Hospitality Awards. Caterer.com also boasts a number of partnerships, including AA Hotel Services and Springboard, The British Hospitality Association (BHA), and the Hospitality Industry Trust (HIT) Scotland. Each year, Caterer.com organises a study to gather feedback from its extensive database of hospitality jobseekers. In 2011, they launched The Blog, which provides hospitality sector insight for recruiters.
CatererGlobal.com
Launched in 2007, CatererGlobal.com is an international recruitment site in the hospitality sector with over 150,000 active jobseekers per month. Traditionally, their market focus has been on the Middle Eastern hospitality and tourism industry, in particular the United Arab Emirates. However, CatererGlobal.com is currently pursuing a more global approach that incorporates other continents.
CWJobs.co.uk
This website specialises in IT recruitment around the UK and Ireland. There are 450,000 IT candidates a month on CWJobs.co.uk. CWJobs.co.uk sponsored the Irish Recruiters Conference in 2009. In 2011, CWJobs.co.uk won “Best Recruitment Website” at the DADI Awards and was nominated for the PRCA Frontline Award for “Digital & New Media”. CWJobs.co.uk struck a partnership with technology commerce website TechWeekEurope UK in 2013. This deal allowed CWJobs.co.uk to advertise IT vacancies on TechWeekEurope UK. The jobs board also has associations with Computer Weekly, V3, and The Inquirer. In May 2010 they launched a jobseeker blog aimed at people looking for work in the IT sector.
RetailChoice.com
RetailChoice.com advertises opportunities for those seeking work in the retail industry, including customer services, fashion, and design. RetailChoice.com formed a partnership in 2014 with The HR Retail Circle. This relationship laid the foundation for the Rising HR Star initiative, which awarded a HR professional with £2500 to help further their career. RetailChoice.com also conducts wider industry pertained research, and has been an affiliate of the British Retail Consortium. For example, in 2013 RetailChoice.com found that Glasgow had the highest number of applicants per retail job.
1999-2011
Totaljobs was founded in 1999 by Reed Business Information. It was the first online recruitment site launched by the company, but CWJobs.co.uk followed shortly after. Two years later, Caterer.com was launched for jobseekers in the hospitality sector. Caterer.com became fully incorporated with the Totaljobs Group assembly in 2003. By January 2004, totaljobs had achieved 1 million unique users – the highest level of traffic generated for the company to date. The same year saw the formation of RetailChoice.com and Catererglobal.com.
Totaljobs was the largest online recruitment website in the UK by 2006, and subsequently achieved its highest unique user count for a single month at 2,000,000. CareerStructure.com began operating in 2006.
In April 2008, totaljobs received a million job applications directly to its site, and boasted 8,500 unique clients in 2010. By 2011, totaljobs had attracted 3 million unique users in a month for the first time. The website also had its highest number of applicants for a single day – on 24 January 2011 totaljobs processed 100,000 job applications.
2012
In April 2012 Totaljobs Group was bought by StepStone for £110 million. While Reed Business Information had been the previous owners, they wanted to shift their attention to “paid content and data services”. StepStone’s decision to acquire the Totaljobs Group was made as part of a broader process to increase their share in the European job market. StepStone later acquired Jobsite in 2014.
Social initiatives
Totaljobs partnered with Queens Park Rangers F.C. in order to help local people get back into work. The programme worked with those aged 35 and over, living in and around the W12 area, and had been unemployed for over 6 months.
In 2013 totaljobs supported the Emerging Talent Fund. Administered by Sports Aid, the programme offered funding to young and promising sports people.
In October 2014 Totaljobs Group became a corporate partner to The Prince’s Trust, which amongst other things helps young people get back to work.
Recognition and awards
Advertising campaigns
Totaljobs launched their Mr. Luck campaign in 2012, which was produced by VCCP London and included a 30-second advert featuring the character Mr. Luck, who seemingly provided unreliable careers guidance to jobseekers. Central to the Mr. Luck scheme was that jobseekers did not in fact require good fortune to land their dream job, but should of course use the totaljobs website instead. The Job Academy aimed to inform jobseekers on how best to sell their skillset when applying for work. Careers professional Aimee Bateman hosted the videos, and placed the five jobseekers with CV, media and stylist experts.
Unpaid internships
Totaljobs Group does not advertise unpaid internships. This pledge has been followed by the company since 2013.
