Club career
Šunjić began his career with HŠK Zrinjski Mostar of the Bosnia and Herzegovina Premier League.

For the season 2010–11 he was loaned to Belgian Pro League outfit Kortrijk. He didn't have a good season, failing to establish himself as a regular starter, so Kortrijk decided not to buy him, and he returned to Zrinjski for the first part of the 2011–12 season.

In 2012, for the second part of the 2011–12 season, he joined Ukrainian club Zorya Luhansk. There he established himself as a regular member of starting 11, earning his first international cap as a member of Zorya. His tenure at Ukrainian club lasted two and a half seasons.

On July 9, 2014, after two good performances at the World Cup, he signed a 3-year-deal with Russian club Kuban Krasnodar.

On 27 August 2015 he moved to VfB Stuttgart, on a three-year deal.
In January 2017 Šunjić was loaned out to U.S. Città di Palermo until the end of the 2016–17 season.

Šunjić was part of Bosnia and Herzegovina under-21 squad.

Šunjić made his international debut for Bosnia and Herzegovina in a friendly against Wales in Llanelli on 15 August 2012 coming on as a second-half substitute.
